Vietnam has so far received more than 5 million doses of Moderna vaccine from the US.

That is among 23 million doses that the US delivered to 20 Asian countries.

The list of seven countries that received the most vaccine from the US also includes Indonesia (8 million doses), Philippines (nearly 6.3 million), Colombia (6 million), South Africa (5.66 million), Bangladesh (5.5 million), Pakistan (5.5 million).

“As of today, the US has shipped over 110 million doses of vaccines to more than 60 countries with a lot more to come. That’s more than every other country has donated. Combined,” US President Joe Biden announced on August 3.

The same day the White House announced that these more than 110 million doses – that are already saving lives around the world – are just the beginning of the administration’s efforts to provide vaccines to the world.

“Starting at the end of this month, the administration will begin shipping a half a billion Pfizer doses that the United States has pledged to purchase and donate to 100 low-income countries in need.

“Importantly, the United States has not and will not use its vaccines to secure favors from other countries. Our aim is to save lives,” said the administration.

Vietnam received the first batch of Moderna vaccine from the US under COVAX scheme on July 10 with more than 2 million doses.

On July 24, a second shipment of 3,000,060 doses of Moderna vaccine from the US was shipped to Vietnam.

Vietnam’s Ambassador to the US Ha Kim Ngoc said the US side was considering further aid for Vietnam in the near future.

"This is a timely and meaningful sharing and assistance for Vietnam," he told press on July 25.

Ambassador Ngoc said the countries’ demand for vaccines from the US was very large. To ensure the vaccine supply is delivered to its partners as quickly as possible, the US has chosen the COVAX mechanism as the main distribution channel.

According to Ambassador Ngoc, the US only deploys aid under a bilateral mechanism with a very few neighboring countries in Central America due to complicated regulations, procedures and coordination issues from the US side.

The US government's relevant agencies such as the National Security Council and the Department of State will directly determine the specific amount of aids for each partner, then notify and transfer them through COVAX to the recipient, the ambassador said.
