In the past nearly two years, the airport applied stringent procedures in welcoming repatriation flights and passengers nationwide so as to minimise the risks of Covid-19 infections spreading in the community.

The airport has adopted a number of preventive measures by requiring all passengers to wear masks, installing a thermal sensor to check their temperature and disinfecting all airplanes, VnExpress reported.

From February 2020 to September 2021, it welcomed 232 flights carrying 46,722 passengers from different countries.

In September, Van Don airport welcomed several flights with vaccine passport holders on a trial basis, allowing hundreds of Vietnamese from the U.S., France and Japan to return to Vietnam. All passengers were fully vaccinated, in good health and had coronavirus negative results from tests done within 72 hours before their flights.

Director of Van Don International Airport Pham Ngoc Sau affirmed that the health and safety of passengers is placed as the top priority when reopening domestic and international commercial flights.

He was quoted as saying by Nhan Dan that AHA certification is an important guarantee for passengers to travel on flights to and from Van Don International Airport.

Bamboo Airways resumed its service between Van Don airport and Ho Chi Minh City on October 27 with three flights a week. Vietjet also resumed flights on the route on October 31 with one flight everyday. Vietnam Airlines is re-opening flights on the route on December 1 with three flights per week.

The VIP and CIP Lounge at Van Don Airport was honoured as Asia's Leading Airport Lounge 2021 at the recent 28th World Travel Awards, cited VietnamPlus.

Van Don International Airport received its first flight in July 2018 before if officially opened in December of the same year.

This was the first airport to be built by a private Vietnamese firm. Construction started in March 2016 by Sun Group with total investment VND7.7 trillion (USD 333.48 million) under the Build-Operation-Transfer model.

The AHA certificate recognises the commitment to maintaining safety and prevention measures against the Covid-19 pandemic of airports around the world.

The certificate also provides foundation for State management agencies and governments to consider the reopening of international routes between certified airports, thus creating a green corridor for safe air travel.

The ACI has set strict assessment criteria for the AHA certificate, including cleaning and disinfection procedures, physical distancing, staff protection, physical layout, passenger communications, and passenger facilities.
