Vietnam and Algeria are linked by similarities in history

The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO), and the Vietnam-Algeria Friendship Association (VAFA) in collaboration with the Algerian Embassy in Vietnam hosted a ceremony in Hanoi on October 27 to celebrate the 60th founding anniversary of the Vietnam-Algeria diplomatic ties (October 28, 1962-2022).

Addressing the event, Deputy Minister of Construction Le Quang Hung, VAFA Chairman, highlighted the fruitful development of the bilateral relations across fields, saying that regular visits by the two countries' leaders have created a premise for comprehensive cooperation between the two sides.

He said that Vietnam and Algeria are two countries on two different continents and although geographically far apart, the people of Vietnam and Algeria have long been linked by similarities in history. Vietnam is proud to be one of the first countries in the world to recognize the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic in 1958.

On October 28, 1962, Vietnam and Algeria officially established diplomatic relations. This is an important event, opening a new page in the history of friendship and cooperation between the two countries and two peoples.

For the past 60 years, the traditional friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Algeria have been constantly cultivated, achieving positive results in many fields.

Along with the development of bilateral cooperation in politics, economy, culture, science, and technology, the friendship between the people of Vietnam and Algeria has also been promoted.

Le Quang Hung said that the Vietnam-Algeria Friendship Association has coordinated with the Algerian Embassy in Vietnam to carry out various activities, contributing to the friendship between the two countries.

Through these activities, the Vietnamese people, especially the young generation, will better understand the country and people of Algeria, and the traditional friendship between the two countries.

On the basis of cooperation mechanisms and agreements signed, the economic and trade bonds have recorded remarkable achievements.

The two-way trade hit US$158 million in 2021, and nearly US$110 million in the first nine months of 2022. Algeria remains the fourth largest importer of Vietnamese goods in Africa.

Elevating Vietnam-Algeria relations

For his part, Algerian Ambassador to Vietnam Abdelhamid Boubazine recalls historical milestones in bilateral relations, affirming that the Vietnam-Algeria relationship with the solid foundation built by the two nations' leaders has been flourishing.

That friendship began with young Algerian citizens being forced by the French to join their army. However, the Algerian soldiers deserted from the French army to join the Vietnamese army, along with the Vietnamese fighting against the French colonialists.

In the early 1940s, President Ho Chi Minh visited Algeria at the invitation of the Algerian Communist Party.

He said that the 12th meeting of the Vietnam-Algeria Joint Committee in December this year will create new momentum for bilateral partnership.

The Algerian Embassy will continue to promote cooperation with VAFA in the coming time, towards further tightening the traditional relations of the two nations, he stressed.
