Nor Hayati Zainuddin, director of the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Department in Vietnam, shared about tourism cooperation between the two countries with the Vietnam Times within the framework of Vietnam International Travel Mart 2024 taking place from April 11 to April 14, in Hanoi.
Coming to Vietnam International Travel Mart 2024, what special tourism products does the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Department bring?
Vietnam International Travel Mart 2024 with the theme "Tourism - Green Transformation for Sustainable Development," emphasizes that responsible tourism is associated with preserving the environment for sustainable development.
Therefore, the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Department and accompanying partners will introduce potential tourist destinations, including eco-tourism, which is the strength of Malaysia's tourism industry.
Throughout the 4-day event, the colorful image of Malaysia will be recreated through traditional Sarawak dance, performances of the traditional musical instrument Sape, quiz activities to learn about Malaysia and the art of Teh Tarik (pulled tea) dance performed by cultural artists from Malaysia.
How do you evaluate the cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia tourism?
Malaysia's tourism industry has seen a strong recovery in the post-Covid-19 pandemic period. The initial target of 16.1 million international visitors was spectacularly surpassed when Malaysia welcomed 29 million international visitors in 2023, becoming the country welcoming the most international tourists in Southeast Asia.
In 2023, tourism cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia had important developments, especially in the context of the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries. Last year, Malaysia welcomed 344,361 Vietnamese tourists, and 470,105 Malaysian tourists traveled to Vietnam.
In 2024, Malaysia hopes to attract more tourists from Vietnam with a target of 470,000 visitors. We will continue to work closely with travel companies and airlines to launch attractive travel packages to new destinations in Malaysia besides Kuala Lumpur.
This year, we are paying special attention to promoting eco-tourism destinations such as Sabah and Sarawak. In addition, we also introduce tourism products combined with education in Malaysia for Vietnamese students.

In the coming time, what should the two countries do to promote further cooperation in the field of tourism?
Vietnam, with a population of approximately 90 million people, is truly an important market for Malaysia's tourism industry.
Closeness in geographical distance and similarities in culture make Vietnam a valuable partner in bilateral tourism. By tapping into this market, Malaysia can attract a large number of tourists, which will contribute positively to the country's tourism revenue and economic growth.
In 2024, the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Department will continue efforts to increase flight links between Malaysia and Vietnam through close cooperation with airlines.
Besides, we also planned to bring the Malaysian delegation to other cities in Vietnam such as Hai Phong, Can Tho, Thanh Hoa, and Nha Trang. We want to explore these markets, and cooperate with travel and tourism associations here, to attract more tourists as well as create trade exchange opportunities.
The Malaysia Tourism Promotion Department coordinates closely with the Vietnam Tourism Association to exchange information to promote tourism between the two countries.
