Vietnam-Canada Strengthen Bilateral Relations

Despite the geographical distance, over the past 50 years, Vietnam-Canada relations have been constantly strengthened and developed. This brings practical benefits to the people of the two countries, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and common development for the international community.

The program celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Canada took place on November 2 in Hanoi. The event is organized by the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) in collaboration with the Canadian Embassy in Vietnam.

People-to-people exchanges activities

Speaking at the meeting, Phan Anh Son, President of VUFO, said Vietnam-Canada relations are constantly being strengthened and increasingly developed in many fields of politics, diplomacy, economics, trade, and investment, private sector, education-training, and tourism.

The two countries established useful mechanisms for friendly people-to-people exchanges. Vietnam-Canada Friendship Association (VCFA) was established on May 15, 1999, and is a member organization of VUFO.

The Association regularly coordinates with the Canadian Embassy in Vietnam and Canadian partners to organize rich people-to-people exchange activities.

Activities include delegation exchanges, friendly meetings promoting the image of the country and people of Canada and Vietnam, events celebrating the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, seminars to connect business and trade.

The Association also coordinated with the Canadian Embassy in Vietnam to organize the International Friendship Run for Children.

The Canada-Vietnam Friendship Society (CVFS) was established in March 2003. The Canada-Vietnam Society (CVS) was established in April 2016 with six branches in the states of Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Alberta, Vancouver and Surey.

In October 2022, the Vietnam-Canada Business Association was established to connect the business communities of the two countries. The Association is a partner of VUFO and the Vietnam-Canada Friendship Association.

Within these frameworks, the Canadian Ambassador attended and visited localities in Vietnam, laying the foundation for understanding and cooperation between the two countries.

"Cooperation on the people's channel of the two countries contributed to building a favorable and positive social foundation for the relationship between the two countries to increasingly develop and deepen," Phan Anh Son said.

Shawn Perry Steil, Canadian ambassador to Vietnam, said that the core of Vietnam-Canada relations is the people.

The two countries need to foster strong relations between the two peoples, exchange experiences, seek common values ​​and maintain cooperation in all circumstances.

He said Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy will promote cooperative activities, thereby strengthening the trusted partnership between the two countries.

Canada determines that Vietnam is an important partner to contribute to building a more secure, prosperous, harmonious and sustainable Indo-Pacific region.

At the event, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc said the comprehensive partnership between the two countries still has a lot of potential.

Canada increasingly prioritizes promoting relations with the region, clearly demonstrated through the newly Indo-Pacific Strategy and the established ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership

Vietnam always values ​​its relationship with Canada and hopes that the two countries' relationship will always cooperate for peace, stability, and development in the region and the world.

Deputy Minister Ha Kim Ngoc also mentioned the role of the Vietnamese community of nearly 300,000 people as well as more than 20,000 Vietnamese international students in Canada.

They are "messengers," making an important contribution to strengthen the friendship, understanding and attachment between the two peoples.

Relations between localities of the two countries are increasingly promoted, demonstrated by the opening of trade and investment representative offices in Vietnam by Canadian provinces and states such as Saskatchewan and British Colombia.
