Vietnam Desires Practical Cooperation Across Multiple Areas with China

Vietnam attaches great importance to and wishes to further step up mutual ties in a stable and sustainable manner, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son said during his telephone talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on April 14.

During the talks, FM Son congratulated China on its achievements in socio-economic development and external relations, expressing his confidence that the northern neighbour will successfully organise the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China this year.

In response, Minister Wang said the Chinese Party and Government pays close attention to further developing its comprehensive strategic co-operative partnership with Vietnam, considering it to be a priority in its regional diplomatic strategy.

Both sides showed their elation at the remarkable progress made in terms of the relationship between the two Parties and countries, whilst also consenting to continue intensifying high-level exchanges and meetings, along with ramping up practical co-operation across a variety of fields.

They also agreed to boost co-ordination in facilitating bilateral trade and removing barriers faced in border trade, whilst also swiftly soon recognizing each other’s vaccine passport in a bid to make travelling and exchange activities easier.

The two sides held an open and straightforward discussion on the sea issues and concurred to work hard together to control and deal with any disputes in the spirit of respecting each other’s legitimate rights and interest. This is in addition to strictly carrying out agreements on the fundamental principles guiding the settlement of Vietnam-China sea-related issues and international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982, and together with ASEAN reaching positive progress for the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

The two diplomats also took time to compare notes on regional and international issues of shared concern, including the Ukraine issue. FM Son used the platform to underscored Vietnam’s unwavering policy of supporting the settlement of disputes and differences by peaceful measures in line with the UN Charter and fundamental principles of international law. This ensures security and safety for civilians, whilst also protecting basic civil infrastructure system. The nation therefore backs and stays ready to make positive contributions to humanitarian relief activities, diplomatic processes, dialogues, and negotiations, as well as the reconstruction and recovery process in Ukraine, Minister Son added.
