Vietnam, Korea Promote Strategic Cooperation on Meteorology

The Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration and the Korea Meteorological Administration held the 6th bilateral meeting online on December 7, to promote strategic cooperation between the two countries in the near future.
Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Park Kwangsuk, Administrator of the Korea Meteorological Administration said that Vietnam and Korea have had a long-standing historical relationship in the field of meteorology. The two sides signed the bilateral agreement on cooperation in meteorology in 2009.
Since then, the two sides have increased exchanges and cooperation in many fields such as climate change, meteorological radar, and storm forecasting.
“I hope that through today's meeting, we will jointly explore new areas and strengthen cooperation to improve the meteorological services of the two agencies. I am also pleased to sign an agreement to renew the MoU as an important cooperation partner. This will be an opportunity for the two agencies to continue to develop and bring cooperation to a new level,” said Park Kwangsuk.
On the Vietnamese side, Professor Tran Hong Thai, general director of the Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) said that the past two years were quite challenging, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
He continued to speak about the importance of the meteorological agencies of the two countries and their progress, notably cooperation in capacity building and technical assistance; radar operating application; receive and exchange experts from Korea to support consulting; cooperation between the regional meteorological stations in Vietnam and the regional stations of Korea.
“It can be seen that the cooperation activities between the two agencies have gradually deepened with more diverse forms, serving well the disaster risk reduction for sustainable development of the socio-economic of the two countries,” he said.
Tran Hong Thai also said that at this meeting, in addition to summarizing the activities of the 2018-2020 period, the two agencies will discuss and agree on new cooperation activities in the period 2021-2023. The two sides will work towards 2030 in the context that the General Department of the Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration has just approved the strategy for the meteorological sector's development to 2030 with a vision to 2045.

In addition, the General Department of Korea Meteorological Administration and the Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration are also playing an active and important role in various activities of the World Meteorological Organization and the South Asian Meteorological Association.
“I am confident that our upcoming cooperation activities, besides serving the interests of the two countries, will also contribute to the development of the world meteorological community and the community of Asia in natural disaster prevention, protection of human life, and sustainable socio-economic development,” said Prof. Tran Hong Thai.
At the meeting, the two sides discussed cooperation activities between the two agencies in the future such as: Cooperation on weather radar; cooperation on satellites, weather forecasting; respond to climate disasters; marine meteorological services; application of AI technology in weather services.
The General Department of Korea Meteorological Administration and the Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration also signed an agreement to extend the MoU; agreed that the 7th bilateral meeting between the two General Departments will be held in the next 2 years in Vietnam.
