State President runs for NA deputy position in Ho Chi Minh City
State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc is among 13 candidates introduced by the Party Central Committee to run for a position in the upcoming 15th National Assembly (NA) in Ho Chi Minh City’s NA deputy delegation.
Today, Apr 23, the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Committee of Ho Chi Minh City announced the list of qualified candidates running for the upcoming elections to of the 15th NA and the municipal People's Council for the 2021-2026 term.
Accordingly, State President Phuc was introduced to run for a slot at the new-term NA as a candidate from Ho Chi Minh City.
Along with Phuc, Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuracy Le Minh Tri and First Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee Nguyen Anh Tuan are also among the 13 candidates introduced by the Party Central Committee.
Along with 37 nominated candidates in the city, the total number of those running for a slot in the next NA term from Ho Chi Minh City is 50.
The city’s voters will elect 30 members, among them the official 15th NA deputies, on national election day set for May 23, as reported by NDO.
Task Assignments of Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Ministers
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has signed decision 593/QD-TTg on the task assignments of the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Ministers.
The Decision clearly states the assignment principles and working relationship between the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Ministers.
Accordingly, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh is responsible for comprehensively leading and managing all activities within the ambit of the Government’s functions, tasks and powers.
The PM personally directs and administers the following fields: National socio-economic development strategies and plans; national financial, credit, monetary strategies and policies; climate change adaptation strategies; national defence, security diplomacy strategies and national defence and security; institutional building; apparatus organisation and personnel work; state administrative boundaries, general issues on emulation and commendation; State budget expenditure and use of State budget reserves, the financial reserve fund, foreign exchange reserve fund, and other funds of the State; the issuance of Government debentures and bonds; coordination between the Government and organs/agencies of the Party, the National Assembly, the State President, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, and socio-political organisations.

He will also monitor and direct the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Public Security, the Vietnam News Agency, Vietnam Television, the Voice of Vietnam, and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Management Board; as well personally act as the Head of the State Steering Committee for the East Sea and Islands, Head of the National Steering Committee for Cyber Safety and Security; Head of the National Committee for E-Government; Chairman of the National Emulation-Commendation Council, and Chairman of other national committees and councils.
Deputy Prime Ministers Truong Hoa Binh, Pham Binh Minh, Le Minh Khai, Vu Duc Dam and Le Van Khai will assist the Prime Minister in monitoring and directing some of the assigned fields as well performing other tasks assigned or authorised by the Prime Minister, according to NDO.
PM Pham Minh Chinh arrives in Indonesia for ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the high-ranking delegation of Vietnam arrived at Jakarta, Indonesia at midday on April 23 (local time) to attend the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting at the invitation of the Chair of ASEAN in 2021, Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei.
Those welcoming the delegation at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta included representatives of the Indonesia Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Vietnamese ambassador to Indonesia, the ambassador and permanent representative of Vietnam to ASEAN, staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in Indonesia.
The ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting takes place amid the political instability in Myanmar since February 1 and complex developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in regional countries. Meanwhile, Vietnam successfully served as Chair of the bloc in 2020 and is currently a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and President of the council for April.

At this meeting, PM Chinh and other ASEAN leaders will discuss the Myanmar situation, the ASEAN Community building process, the response to COVID-19, and the bloc’s external relations.
The trip by the Vietnamese PM continues to affirm the country’s priority given to the enhancement of solidarity and mutual support among ASEAN members, thus helping to promote the grouping’s centrality and stature in resolving emerging challenges and create a peaceful and favourable environment for the sustainable development of each country, as well as the region as a whole.
14 new cases, more than 128,000 people vaccinated
Viet Nam confirmed 14 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, bringing the national patient tally to 2,830.
The latest patients include four foreign nationals (two Indian men, one Philippine man, and one Turkish woman) who flew to Viet Nam between April 14-20, according to the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control led by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam.
The two Indian patients are being treated at the Cu Chi field hospital in Ho Chi Minh City and the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa.

The Philippine and Turkish nationals are being treated at the Long Dien District Medical Center in Ba Ria-Vung Tau and the HCMC-based Cu Chi field hospital, respectively.
The other patients are Vietnamese who were brought home from Ukraine (one), the United Arab Emirates (two), Japan (five), Russia (one) and returned to Viet Nam (one) via the Long Binh Border Gate in An Giang Province.
With more than 20,200 people got the first COVID-19 vaccine doses on April 23, the total vaccinated people rose to 128,610, the Ministry of Health reported on Friday morning, according to VGP.
Saudi Arabia supports flood victims in central Vietnam
Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Vietnam Saud F. M. Al-Suwelim, on behalf of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, on April 23 presented the token of US$150,000 in humanitarian aid to help Vietnam’s central provinces affected by recent storms and floods.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the ambassador expressed his sympathy over human and property losses caused by recent floods in central Vietnam, and hoped that the aid would help local residents overcome difficulties and soon stabilise their lives.
Tran Van Sinh, an official of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, thanked the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre for its practical assistance, pledging that the aid will be quickly delivered to affected localities.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Minh Khoi spoke highly of the valuable support of the Saudi Arabian Government and people in general and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre in particular for Vietnam, which he said will help deepen relations between the two countries, as reported by
