HCM city coronavirus tally in new wave tops 90,000

Vietnam recorded 4,560 new local Covid-19 cases Saturday night, including 1,677 in epicenter HCMC, raising the city's tally in the new wave to 90,243.

Of the night's tally, the southern metropolis's was followed by its neighbors Binh Duong (1,207) and Long An (544), cited VnExpress.

Other localities recording new infections are the Mekong Delta's Dong Thap (115), Can Tho (17) and Hau Giang (17), An Giang (2) and Bac Lieu (1); the central region's Khanh Hoa (335), Da Nang (55), Binh Thuan (37), Phu Yen (30), Dak Lak (21), Binh Dinh (19), Gia Lai (13), Nghe An (11), Quang Nam (10), Thua Thien-Hue (9), Dak Nong (8), Ninh Thuan (5), Thanh Hoa (5), Lam Dong (3), Ha Tinh (2), Quang Ngai (1) and Quang Binh (1); and the northern region's Hanoi (43), Vinh Phuc (4), Ha Nam (3), Hai Duong (3), Ninh Binh (2) and Hai Phong (1).

Over three months into its fourth wave, the most challenging that Vietnam has encountered, the country has recorded 141,826 cases in 62 of its 63 cities and provinces.

The country discharged 3,250 patients on Saturday, raising the number of recovered patients since the start of the pandemic to 38,734.

Another 145 deaths in six localities, including 90 in HCMC, between July 19 and 31 were registered, raising the fatalities since the start of the pandemic to 1,306, including 1,271 in the fourth wave.

HCMC, 18 southern localities extend social distancing for another 2 weeks

All 19 southern localities including HCMC will extend social distancing under Directive 16 for another 14 days to contain the coronavirus.

The localities to impose extended social distancing besides HCMC are Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, and 13 Mekong Delta localities Can Tho, Tien Giang, Long An, Vinh Long, Dong Thap, Ben Tre, Hau Giang, An Giang, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, Ca Mau and Kien Giang, according to a decision issued by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Saturday.

The 19 cities and provinces are home to around 35 million people or more than a third of the country's population, VnExpress reported.

They are ordered "not to let residents leave their neighborhood from July 31 until the social distancing order ends."

Localities that have better controlled the pandemic after a period of social distancing can consider easing restrictions on certain areas, while others can consider adding more restrictions if necessary, PM Chinh said.

Directive 16 requires people to stay home and only go out for basic necessities like buying food or medicines or to work at factories or businesses allowed to operate.

People must keep a distance of at least two meters. No more than two people can gather together in public apart from work, schools or hospitals. The majority of public transportation will be shut down and there will be no travel between localities.

On July 9, HCMC and Dong Nai began their two-week social distancing periods, with both localities extending their campaigns until Aug. 1 as the number of daily infections have shown little signs of abating. Meanwhile, Binh Duong began applying social distancing in certain areas on different dates since late last month.

Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh, Ba Ria-Vung Tau and the Mekong Delta began their two-week period on July 19.

Many of the southern localities have added night movement ban besides the directive's restrictions.

Covid-19 patients with no symptoms will quarantine at home for 14 days

Patients with locally acquired Covid-19 showing no symptoms, and with no underlying disease or obesity, will now be under a 14-day home quarantine, according to new guidelines released by the Ho Chi Minh city Department of Health.

New Covid-19 cases with manageable underlying diseases will also be quarantined at home for 14 days.

The new guidelines aim to reduce the overload of Covid-19 patients at healthcare facilities and increase the quality of treatment for Covid-19 patients with moderate and severe symptoms in hospitals.

A Covid-19 patient under home quarantine must have a separate room with windows as well as a separate toilet, a trash can with closed lid, and trash bags.

Separate rooms are not required if members in a family are all Covid-19 patients, cited VNA.

Food and essential supplies must be put on a table placed in front of the patient’s separate room.

Hand sanitiser and disinfectants for surfaces, salt water for gargling, medical masks, thermometer, fever medicine, and vitamins should be available in the quarantine room.

Covid-19 patients under home quarantine are required to always wear medical masks except when eating, drinking and washing. Masks are changed twice a day. Patients must wash hands thoroughly with soap and water or alcohol-based disinfectant before handling the masks.

Their temperature must be measured at least twice a day and a health declaration must be made at least once a day via the electronic health declaration application.

They need to eat nutritious food, drink a lot of water, exercise gently and do breathing exercises for at least 15 minutes daily.

They must call local medical workers if they have a fever of more than 38°C, cough, sore throat, diarrhoea, loss of taste or smell, chest pain or breathing difficulty (unable to take a breath and hold it for 10 seconds).

The district health centre will come to their home to take samples for testing after 14 days. The patient will end the home quarantine if the testing results are negative.

Vietnam in top 10 emerging markets for global data centres

Vietnam is rated one of the 10 emerging markets in the global data centre market, with impressive growth, international standard service delivery capacity, and a large number of organisations and enterprises, research firm ResearchAndMarkets has said.

The Vietnamese data centre market stood at US$858 million last year and is forecast to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of over 14.64% until 2026.

The growth in the Vietnamese data centre market was driven by government projects and initiatives, the report said.

Data protection is a matter of global concern and is becoming an important issue on the agenda of the Vietnamese Government.

The data localisation requirement under the Cybersecurity Law, plus the need for better processing speeds to assist Vietnamese users are the main drivers, which are anticipated to significantly enhance the demand for data centres in the country.

The Vietnamese Government's inclination toward digitisation has further bolstered the demand for data centres across the country, according to VNA.

Furthermore, the Vietnamese data centre market is driven by the shifting of enterprise data to cloud platforms. This has led to an increase in the adoption of data storage solutions, which in turn is expected to positively influence the growth of the market.

Additionally, growing adoption of big data solutions, IoT and cloud-based solutions among others, is expected to propel market growth through 2026.

Furthermore, Lan is the only Asian representative to reach the semi-final round of the athletics category at the Olympics.

Following this historical achievement, the 26-year-old girl has become the first Vietnamese track-and-field athlete to make it through to the semi-final round at any Olympic Games.

The semi-finals of the athletics is scheduled to get underway on August 2, cited VOV.

Lan is the only Vietnamese runner participating in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics after entering as a wild card. Accordingly, each country, region, or territory that does not secure a direct ticket can send a maximum of one male and one female athlete to participate in the Olympics as a wild card.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is scheduled to last until August 8 with Vietnam sending 18 athletes to the games, although all of its hopefuls have so far failed to win a medal.
