According to a recent report by the US-based nonprofit Institute of International Education (IIE), the number of Vietnamese students studying at US higher education institutions has steadily increased, totaling 22,066 for the 2023–2024 academic year.
This figure surpasses 31,000 students when including all levels of education. Vietnam currently ranks first among ASEAN countries in the number of students studying in the United States.

Nearly 50% of Vietnamese students in the US are enrolled in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), contributing to Vietnam’s goals of developing a high-tech workforce.
As part of efforts under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the US Department of State and Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training, the US Embassy and Consulate to Vietnam has funded various initiatives. These include an exchange program in the U.S. focused on improving technical training for 18 Vietnamese education administrators, expanding English-language programs and STEM education activities for Vietnamese youth, implementing the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program, and awarding additional Fulbright scholarships in natural sciences.
The US Embassy and Consulate is committed to bringing more US universities and colleges to Vietnam and enhancing higher education collaborations through specialized workshops, delegation visits, and meetings between US and Vietnamese institutions.
