On the evening of February 11, Nguyen Thi Oanh entered the 1500m event at the 2023 Asian Championships in Athletics Championships held in Kazakhstan. The Vietnamese female athlete started at the 8th track, competing with 7 other athletes from Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, and Kyrgyzstan. The female athlete from Bac Giang always runs in the top middle and maintains a safe distance from the top 2 athletes.

When the race was just over 2 laps, Nguyen Thi Oanh decided to take the lead in the competition. The athlete with a modest height of 1.50m gradually left the Japanese and Kazakh competitors.

Powerful and fast sprints helped the Vietnamese representative to finish first with a time of 4 minutes 15 seconds 55, thereby winning the Asian gold medal.

The silver medal belongs to Yume Goto of Japan with a time of 4 minutes 19 seconds 29, and Kazakhstan athlete Akbayyan Nurnamet won the bronze medal with a time of 4 minutes 21 seconds 31.

Oanh's gold medal is the second time that a Vietnamese athlete has won the gold medal at the Asian Indoor Championships in running events, after Truong Thanh Hang's 800m in 2010.

In Southeast Asia, Nguyen Thi Oanh currently has no opponent in three forte events: 1500m, 5000m, and 3000m obstacle course. In the last two SEA Games, Oanh has brought Vietnamese athletes 6 individual gold medals. Recently, the athlete born in 1995 was voted the best athlete of Vietnam sports in 2022.

Not long after Nguyen Thi Oanh won the gold medal, it was Nguyen Thi Huyen's turn to win silver in the women's 400m event, with a record of 54 seconds 57, then the athlete of Kazakhstan.
