A ceremony was held in Ho Chi Minh City on May 14 to celebrate the 48th anniversary of Vietnam - Netherlands diplomatic relations. At the event, a Campaign Committee to establish Vietnam - Netherlands Friendship Association in Ho Chi Minh City was launched, gathering the Vietnamese citizens who have been living in the Netherlands for many years.

Aim to become an active contributor to bilateral relations

According to Tran Trong Dung - Ho Chi Minh City Journalists Association President, Chairman of the Campaign Committee to establish Vietnam - Netherlands Friendship Association, the Netherlands is one of the first Western countries to have trade relations with Vietnam. Dutch traders are reported to do business in Dang Trong (Vietnam's nowadays southern part) since the early 17th century. 48 years ago, on April 9, 1973, right after the Paris Peace Accords was signed, the Kingdom of the Netherlands officially established diplomatic relations with the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (nowadays the Social Republic of Vietnam).

After nearly half a century, the two countries have built friendly and cooperative relations, which sets a typical example of a dynamic and effective relationship that is increasingly developing in depth. As a highly developed country, the Netherlands has implemented numerous cooperation and investment projects in Vietnam, focusing on environment, climate change, water management, sustainable agriculture, and food security. The two countries closely cooperate through international and regional regimes such as ASEM, ASEAN, EU, EVFTA. The Netherlands is Vietnam's leading trading partner. It has invested more than 7 billion U.S dollars into projects in Vietnam.

Dung said that the Vietnam - Netherlands Friendship Association in Ho Chi Minh City would become an active member in cooperating with other friendship associations in the city to develop people-to-people diplomacy.
