Under the enthusiastic guidance of Dr. Tran Thi Minh Kieu, MSc. Ngo Thi Quynh Chi, and Dr. Le Khanh Trang, fashion design students from Hanoi University of Science and Technology brought numerous collections to the exhibition with the idea of recycling denim fabric into artistic products such as fashion clothing, children's toys, home decoration items (canvas paintings, decorative lights, etc) and fashion accessories. For the contributions to the exhibition of fashion and interior products made from recycled marine trash, students from the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City and Van Lang University were also highly praised.

Some unique creations in this exhibition impressed the Taiwanese media. Significantly, the recycled denim collection called "Whisper" created by Vietnamese students caught the attention of numerous audiences and fashion professionals, according to Taiwan's Yam News.

Students at Hanoi University of Science and Technology used their "Whisper" fashion collection to send the message: "Listen to nature. When we protect the environment, we also protect our future". The collection is inspired by the whispering waves of the ocean, reminding us to change activities to protect our ocean. The scraps of fabric used to make clothing were collected and sorted by color. According to those students, jeans are a fashion staple but an environmental headache because denim pollutes air, water, and workers’ lungs. Instead of being thrown away, jeans could be recycled into useful items.

The “Whisper” collection was made with creative ideas by four fashion design students at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Clothing uses material from excess fabric discharged during the enterprise's garment production process. Multi-colored denim materials combine to create depth for the outfits. The ruffled surface material of denim fabric created by stripping yam and the washing method is the highlight to create softness for the outfits, which presents the image of silver waves on the vast ocean, expressing the message of the collection.

To carry out the exhibition products, fashion design students were supported by TCE JEANS Co. Ltd – a Korean company with a long-term cooperation relationship with the Institute of Textiles, Footwear, and Fashion of Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Fashion design student Pham Thanh Huyen excitedly shared about this project: “Participating in the production of exhibition products has given me a lot of design and technical experience in the fashion industry. Besides, this international extracurricular activity also helps me practice written and communication English during the production process. More importantly, the activity helps me realize the importance and connection between fashion and the environment.

In the future, I wish to have other opportunities to develop qualifications and learn about various aspects of life to apply them to the fashion industry. Another good news is that some students with excellent product exhibitions received an offer to study for a master's degree on a full scholarship from Yunlin University. I will study hard to improve my English skills to have better chances of learning fashion design”.

The exhibition focuses on utilizing creativity with sustainable design ideas that satisfy sustainable development goals, such as recycling waste from the marine, industrial, and everyday life sectors, to increase the sense of responsibility for environmental protection. The exhibit responds to the United Nations' call for all nations to solve the major issues affecting humanity to achieve a better and more sustainable future through the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The International Exhibition of Sea Waste and & Recycling Design is a continuation of the international online scientific conference during the Covid-19 pandemic to enhance international cooperation between universities, lecturers, and students. The results of this cross-national cooperation are scientific articles and online seminars to exchange research ideas among lecturers of creative and design expertise from universities of three countries: Vietnam, Taiwan, and Indonesia. The project is led by Prof. LiHsun Peng of the National Yunlin University of Science and Technology and Dr. Tran Thi Minh Kieu of Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
