The University of Languages ​​and International Studies, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, has established the Faculty of Vietnamese - Southeast Asian Languages and Culture. The Faculty plans to enroll students in the Vietnamese Language and Culture program, majoring in Teaching Vietnamese as a Foreign Language, which is an initiative among the university's key tasks to promote Vietnamese language and culture worldwide.

The Faculty of Vietnamese - Southeast Asian Languages and Culture was established through the merger of the Department of Vietnamese Language and Culture and the Department of Southeast Asian Languages and Cultures.

Throughout its establishment and development, the Faculty has consistently met its training objectives, playing a pivotal role in promoting Vietnamese language, culture, and heritage to a global audience. Each year, it attracts hundreds of international students from countries such as the UK, France, the USA, Sweden, Germany, the Republic of Korea, Japan, China, amonng others.

Vietnamese language courses for foreign students include: university preparatory courses for Lao students and officials from the Lao and Cambodian National Assembly Offices, as well as short-term Vietnamese language and culture courses for JICA volunteers from Japan. Additionally, the Faculty teaches Vietnamese language and culture to police officers from various countries, including Japan, China, the Republic of Korea, Laos, the Czech Republic, Russia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Cambodia. The Faculty also collaborates with universities worldwide, such as Guangxi University for Nationalities, Chengchi University, Beijing Foreign Language University No.2 in China, Keimyung University in the Republic of Korea, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the USA, to teach Vietnamese to their students.

The Faculty has played a positive role as a professional consultant and in training teachers for the Vietnamese language teaching program for overseas Vietnamese children in the UK and Japan, a program managed by the University of Languages ​​and International Studies, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

Dr. Tran Huu Tri, Dean of the Faculty of Vietnamese - Southeast Asian Languages and Culture, said that the undergraduate program in Vietnamese Language and Culture (with a major in Teaching Vietnamese as a Foreign Language) is set to enroll students starting in 2025. This program is open to Vietnamese, foreigners, and overseas Vietnamese. Students will expand their knowledge of Vietnamese language and culture and teaching methods, while also learning one of four foreign languages, including English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Additionally, students can engage in annual activities such as the Vietnamese New Year program, and visits to cultural and historical sites like the Vietnam Ethnic Culture and Tourism Village, Duong Lam ancient village, and Bat Trang pottery village. These activities enhance their communication skills and understanding of Vietnamese culture, helping them adapt to today's multicultural and dynamic work environment.

According to Dr. Tran Huu Tri, the establishment of the Vietnamese Language and Culture major (specializing in Teaching Vietnamese as a Foreign Language) at the University of Languages and International Studies, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, addresses the educational and research needs of both domestic and international students. It represents a significant advancement in affirming the global standing of the Vietnamese language and culture.

“We are proud that Vietnamese, with its millennia-long history, is not only a national language but also a symbol of the will, identity, and solidarity of the Vietnamese people. The establishment of the Vietnamese Language and Culture major provides more opportunities to introduce these cherished values to the international community, while contributing to the preservation and promotion of the cultural identity of the Southeast Asian region, a region rich in language and culture,” said Dr. Tran Huu Tri.
