Vietnamese Writers Honored with Southeast Asian Writers Award

Vietnamese writers Nguyen Binh Phuong and Nguyen Mot have been awarded the Southeast Asian Writers Award (S.E.A. Write Award) for 2022-2023. Organized by the Royal Thai Government and the Writers Association of Thailand, the award celebrates the contributions of poets and writers from Southeast Asia.

The awards ceremony took place on November 25 at the W Bangkok Hotel, gathering 17 distinguished writers and poets from nine ASEAN countries, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. The event was also attended by diplomats, scholars, and literature enthusiasts who share a passion for Southeast Asian arts and culture.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Sumet Tantivejkul praised the honorees for their literary achievements, emphasizing their role in enriching the collective imagination and spirit of ASEAN. Dr. Sumet hoped that the event would foster deeper cultural connections, promoting a shared regional identity and highlighting ASEAN’s rich heritage, unity, and commitment to peace and prosperity.

Born in 1965 in Thai Nguyen, Nguyen Binh Phuong was honored for his novel Mot vi du xoang (A Mediocre Example), which won the Vietnam Writers’ Association Award in 2021. Currently serving as Editor-in-Chief of Military Arts Magazine and Literary Arts Newspaper, Nguyen Binh Phuong is renowned for his compelling novels and evocative poetry.

His six novels, including Nhung dua tre chet gia (Children Who Die Old) and Minh và ho (Us and Them), showcase his innovative storytelling and deep reflections on human nature. In addition, he has published five poetry collections, such as Buoi cau ho hung (The Indifferent Fishing Session). His works have been translated into English, French, and Korean.

Nguyen Mot, born in 1964 in Quang Nam, was honored with the 2023 S.E.A. Write Award for his novel Tu gio thu sau den gio thu chin (From the Sixth to the Ninth Hour). This novel previously garnered the 2023 Vietnam Writers’ Association Award and the Dong Nai Literary and Artistic Award.

With nearly 20 works spanning novels, short stories, essays, and documentary scripts, Nguyen Mot is celebrated for his creative depth. Among his notable works are Truoc mat là dong song (The River in Front), which won the best short story award from the Van Nghe newspaper in 2002; Dat troi van vu (Heaven and Earth in Tumult), a novel archived in the US Library of Congress; and Nguoc mat troi (Against the Sun), which earned the Trinh Hoai Duc Award in 2017.

At the event, Nguyen Mot highlighted the award’s role in fostering regional cultural understanding through literature. He also expressed his aspiration for Vietnam to establish a similar literary accolade to promote literary and cultural exchange among ASEAN countries.

Established in Bangkok in 1979, the SEA Write Award honors literary excellence in the ASEAN region. The awards have been presented annually to leading poets and writers in the 10 ASEAN countries. VNS
