Vietnam’s field hospital in South Sudan awarded UN peacekeeping medals

The medal- awarding ceremony was held by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), in recognition of Vietnamese peacekeepers’ contributions at Vietnam’s Level-2 Field Hospital No. 2 during a year-long mission in the country.
Head of UNMISS Bentiu Field Office Hiroko Hirahara said that L2FH2 has played an important role in Covid-19 prevention and control at the Bentiu base. In addition to the professional work, the hospital has also actively participated in activities of the United Nations Humanitarian Civil-Military Coordination (CIMIC) like HIV/AIDS counseling, supporting Bentiu Hospital, sharing medicine and equipment with local authorities, and providing useful devices and learning tools for local students, she added.

Lieutenant Colonel, Doctor Vo Van Hien- Director of L2FH2 said that during the past year, the hospital has treated more than 1,500 U.N. staff and local residents. In particular, many complicated medical emergencies that require a high level of expertise have been successfully handled.

L2FH2 has performed 11 major surgeries, 17 small and medium surgeries, and transported 7 patients for emergency treatment by airway to the higher-level hospitals. Medical staff at the hospital have received a lot of praises for their sense of responsibility, dedication as well as professional capacity.

L2FH2, with 63 personnel, has the duty of examining and treating all the U.N staff in the stationed area; providing emergency treatment for forces as required by the Head of the United Nations Mission in Bentiu or the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in Juba; assisting health care for non-UN forces due to a humanitarian require in the absence of other resources.

L2FH2 previously received compliments from the UN health division based in New York as the hospital with the best preparation within the UNMISS in response to COVID-19, in addition to other commendations from the heads of the UN health agency, the UN peacekeeping force’s medical division, and the UNMIS health department, Nhan Dan (People) Newspaper reported.
In 2019, Staff under Vietnam’s Level-2 Field Hospital No. 1 in South Sudan were also honored with the United Nations Peacekeeping medals for their dedication to the career.
