Defense diplomacy is not merely external relations work by the Ministry of Defence, but also includes foreign activities in the defense field with countries and international organizations relating to the independence, sovereignty, and national interests of Vietnam and regional and global peace and security.

During its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020, Vietnam actively promoted its host role to successfully organize conferences and activities, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, and actively participated in multilateral defense cooperation mechanisms within the framework of ASEAN and where ASEAN plays the leading role, as cited by Vietnamnet.

To date, Vietnam has passed more than 80 documents, concentrating on building ASEAN Community, signified through promoting the mid-term review of the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025; reviewing the ASEAN Charter, and building post-2025 ASEAN Community Vision. Along with that, in 2020, Vietnam is expected to put forth 32 initiatives, 28 of which have been included in the document so far. This is regarded as the success of Vietnam as its initiatives can meet the common concerns of ASEAN member states and adapt to the actual situation.

Vietnam’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations is also a spotlight in the international arena. Since its official participation began in 2014, the country has to date dispatched 50 official arrivals to UN missions in the Central African Republic and South Sudan, together with two field hospitals in South Sudan with 126 officials and medical workers. Vietnamese officials also hold key positions in other activities, proving the prestige of Vietnam’s army in international activities.

With Vietnam's success in COVID-19 prevention and control, the UN on December 2020 asked the country to establish a Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), PANO reported. In the context of the complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Level-2 Field Hospital Rotation 2 of Vietnam in South Sudan has actively advised the UNMISS to implement measures to prevent and combat infection, as well as develop response scenarios to effectively handle all circumstances.

At the Army Games 2020, the Vietnamese team was honored once again as the winner of Group 2. This is not only a military playground but also where the strength and capacity of countries’ armies are seen.

According to VOV, Vietnam has won Gold Medal in Group 2 of the Tank Biathlon Competition at the just concluded Army Games in Russia. The crew is eligible to compete with Russia, Belarus, and China in next year’s Army Games’ Group 1. In addition, the Engineer and Rescue teams won Bronze Medals. The Communication Team won the Bronze Medal in the Master Skills Competition. The Snipers won the Silver Medal in the Team Coordination Competition and the Bronze Medal in the Fastest Team Competition.

With successes in defense diplomacy, Vietnam’s national flag will continue to fly over all parts of the country, asserting its national sovereignty while affirming a peaceful Vietnam as a reliable and responsible partner of the international community.
