Vietnam's Quick Embrace of the Internet
On the morning of December 7, in Hanoi, the Department of Telecommunications, Vietnam Internet Center (Ministry of Information and Communications) and Vietnam Internet Association held a program to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Vietnam's Internet and Internet Day 2022. The program was attended by Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Pham Duc Long.
At the program, Long said that the decision to open the market and connect to the global internet that Vietnam made 25 years ago shows bravery and long-term vision. This was also a sign of the determination to actively integrate, contributing to comprehensively changing the socio-economic life of the Party and State and leaders of the information and communication industry.
Vietnam becomes a strong country in telecommunications
According to Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Pham Duc Long, despite starting late compared to the global progress, after 25 years, Vietnam has caught up with other countries in the region and the world. Now, Vietnam has become a strong country in telecommunications and the internet with modern technology and high internet access and popularity.
Vietnam’s current population has reached 72.1 million, of which 73.2% use the Internet in daily life, ranking 13th in the world. Broadband infrastructure has covered 99.73% nationwide; 19.79 million households have fiber optic cable, reaching 72.4%. A fiber optic cable system has been deployed to 100% of communes, wards, and towns, 91% of villages, and 100% of schools.
The number of mobile phone subscribers using smartphones is 94.2 million; the number of mobile broadband subscribers is 82.2 million. There are more than 564 thousand domain names ".vn", ranked 2nd in ASEAN, and 10th in Asia - Pacific region. The level of IP usage (including both IPv4 and IPv6) is in the top 20-30 globally. The IPv6 application rate in Vietnam reaches 53% with more than 50 million users. Vietnam ranks 10th in the world in IPv6 conversion.

According to Deputy Minister Pham Duc Long, Vietnam's Internet businesses also mobilize, adapt, and grow constantly, transforming their model from infrastructure business development to platform business development, and reaching out to the world.
Over 25 years of development, Vietnam's Internet has transformed from a communication infrastructure into a digital infrastructure of the digital economy. Digital infrastructure will include broadband telecommunications infrastructure, cloud computing infrastructure, infrastructure for providing technology such as services, and infrastructure for digital platforms. The Internet is no longer only a tool for socio-economic development but has created a new development method for socio-economic development.
In the next stage, the information and communication industry, and management agencies and enterprises are responsible for building an Internet infrastructure that is technologically autonomous, widespread, modern, and secure. They also need to promote and protect the security of data flow and direct the integration process of the Internet into all socio-economic development activities.
The whole society takes responsibility for building and developing a safe and sustainable Internet in Vietnam. Society should consider building and developing the Internet as building and developing a digital life for the digital transformation period.
According to Vu Hoang Lien, President of the Vietnam Internet Association, in the past 25 years, the development of the Internet in Vietnam is undeniable. The Internet has brought Vietnam opportunities and innovations. The most obvious is the transformation of society, service models, and applications on the Internet, bringing about rapid economic, social, and cultural changes.
The Internet is now not only for everyone but also for everything, for every field and every industry. Digital transformation is a new development method to speed up and shorten the country's industrialization and modernization process.
Vietnam's Internet has developed spectacularly
Over the past 25 years, resources in Vietnam have developed dramatically, making a great contribution to the strong development of Vietnam's Internet. As of October 31, 2022, the number of domain names reached 564,444, about 1000 times higher than in the early days when the Internet first appeared in Vietnam. The domain name ".vn" is the national domain name with the largest number of registered users in Southeast Asia, ranked top 10 in Asia Pacific region.
At present, mobile broadband infrastructure has covered 99.73% of villages nationwide. 19.79 million Vietnamese households have fiber optic cable, accounting for 72.4%.
The fiber optic system is deployed to 100% of communes, wards, and towns, 91% of villages, and 100% of schools. Vietnam currently has 94.2 million mobile smartphone subscribers. Mobile broadband subscribers are 82.2 million, accounting for 74.3% of the population.

Regarding IP/ASN, from three independent networks of the first ISPs in 2002, as of October 2022, there are a total of 791 organizations and enterprises using independent IP/ASN. There are a total of 533 independent AS networks in Vietnam, which are nuclear networks connected to form the Internet system of Vietnam. The number of IPv4 addresses in Vietnam has grown to more than 16 million, ranking 8th in the Asia-Pacific region and 29th globally.
Internet development has led to the global depletion of IPv4 addresses since 2011. In anticipation of the inevitable trend in IPv6 application, Vietnam has promoted and prepared for the transition of the IPv6 new generation Internet addresses since 2008 with the overall goal of "Vietnam's Internet operating safely and stably on the basis ofbased on IPv6 technology from 2019."
After more than 10 years of implementing the National Action Plan on IPv6, Vietnam is now a country with remarkable results in IPv6 applications.
By the end of October 2022, Vietnam's IPv6 application rate reached about 53%, ranking 2nd in ASEAN and 8th globally. The conversion to use the new generation of Internet addresses and protocols is a bold and right step that Vietnam has made, helping the country to keep pace with developed countries in the world; affirming its position in the region and internationally.
Assessing the development of Vietnam's Internet, Paul Wilson, Director of the Asia - Pacific Network Information Center said that Vietnam's Internet has changed rapidly. The rate of IPv6 usage in Vietnam is also highly appreciated by the international community. Organizations, governments, and people all benefit from the Internet. Google believes in the future of the Internet and accompanies the development of Vietnam's Internet.
