Virtual Run to Mark International Day for Mine Awareness
A virtual race will be held from March 23-April 2 in response to the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action (April 4).
The Quang Tri Department of Foreign Affairs, the Quang Tri Mine Action Center (QTMAC) and other mine action operators are conducting many meaningful activities such as mine action picture exhibition, fundraising for mine victims, virtual race from now to April 4.
The theme for this year's celebration is “For community health – Mine victim Assistance.”
This virtual race is a race you run (or walk) at any location, any time with your smartphone or Garmin/Sunnto watch.
Runners can choose a place to walk or jog in accordance with their personal conditions, and ensure the 5K principle as recommended by the Ministry of Health on Covid-19 prevention and control.
Through these activities, the organizers hope to help Vietnamese in general and Quang Tri people, in particular, to be more aware of the dangers of explosive remnants of war.
In addition, all money raised from the activities will be used to support mine victims in Quang Tri, which is accepting financial support from now until the end of the race.

Vietnam is among the countries with a serious unexploded ordnance (UXO) issue and still suffers from years at war.
It is estimated that around 800,000 tonnes of UXO were left across the country after the war ended, mostly in the central region. More than six million hectares of land in the country is bomb-and mine-polluted, accounting for 18.82% of Vietnam's total area.
Since 1975, the deadly legacy of wars has killed more than 40,000 people and injured 60,000 others.
Given this, Vietnam has made active moves in settling war consequences, including UXO, over the past many years, including Program 504 is important to socio-economic development as well as the stabilization of people's life.
Over 5,000 UXO victims and other affected people have received assistance in health care, vocational training, and livelihoods. Besides, hundreds of thousands of people, especially those in the areas heavily tarnished with UXO, have accessed methods for preventing UXO accidents. Notably, the number of UXO accidents has been significantly reduced, with many local already free of such incidents for many years.
Quang Tri is one of the most UXO-polluted localities in Vietnam as it was the fiercest battlefield during the war. A survey in 2017 by the Ministry of National Defense shows that nearly 82% of this province's area is contaminated with UXO.
