VUFO President meets ICAP leaders, visits University of Havana

Within the framework of President Nguyen Xuan Phuc's visit to Cuba, President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) Nguyen Phuong Nga has a meeting with the Cuban Institute for Friendship with Peoples (ICAP) and the University of Havana.

Within the framework of President Nguyen Xuan Phuc's official visit to Cuba, President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) on Sep. 19 (local time) had a meeting and worked with the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) and visited the University of Havana where they affirmed to continue to closely coordinate, share experiences, and actively promote people-to-people relations between the two countries in the coming time.

At the meeting with ICAP at the Friendship Palace, the VUFO and ICAP's leaders informed about the situation of the two organizations, reviewed the friendship and cooperation agreement for the period 2020-2025 between the two organizations.

Accordingly, despite the complicated situation of the Covid-19 pandemic, the two sides have renewed their activities to adapt to the situation and have well implemented the contents of the agreement between the two sides, organizing many practical activities to promote relations between the two organizations and the two countries.

The two sides praise the affiliations between the VUFO and ICAP and hope to promote solidarity and friendship between the two peoples through the two agencies’ cooperation programmes.

The VUFO, through many forums, has voiced the affection, support and solidarity of the Vietnamese people with the Cuban people, organized programs to celebrate Cuba’s major festivals and the anniversary of Vietnam – Cuba diplomatic ties. On the side of ICAP, they also organized online friendship meetings to commemorate late President Ho Chi Minh, celebrate Vietnam's National Day and Fidel Castro’s historic visit to the southern liberation zone of Vietnam in Quang Tri.

Nga affirmed that, with the line of the 13th National Congress of Vietnam, people-to-people diplomacy is considered one of the pillars of Vietnam's diplomacy today. In modern times, people-to-people diplomacy has opportunities and should be strongly promoted. With the traditional affection and friendship, especially between Vietnam and Cuba, with the similarity in goals and operation form between the VUFO and ICAP, the two organizations should promote more activities to nurture and deepen the exemplary brotherhood, traditional friendship, cooperation and solidarity between the two countries’ people.

At the meeting with ICAP's First Vice President Noemi Rabaza Fernandez, she agreed with the proposal of Nga and suggested that the VUFO continue to closely coordinate and share experience in activities and support ICAP in international activities.

At the University of Havana, sharing information with the VUFO President, Dr. Miriam Nicado Garcia, rector of the school said that the University of Havana has a long historical tradition, where President Fidel Castro once studied. Over the years, many Vietnamese students have studied and are always among the best students here. In addition, Cuban officials and students always have good feelings for Vietnam.

Talking to the Vietnamese teachers and students participating in the meeting, Nga recalled the memorable imprints in the relations between Cuba and Vietnam, affirming the friendship and solidarity between the people. The people of the two countries have always united and offered mutual wholehearted support for the struggle for national independence in the past as well as the national development nowadays. With its active activities, the University of Havana has made a meaningful contribution to this effort.

The visit of the President Nguyen Xuan Phuc to Cuba, in the midst of the pandemic that is plaguing the world, is a sign of the solidarity of his people with Cuba. In the face of global challenges, the two nations are working side by side, the supply and technology transfer of Cuba’s Abdala Covid-19 vaccine for Vietnam was an expression of the solidarity that President Ho Chi Minh and Fidel Castro spoke of.

VUFO President Nguyen Phuong Nga affirmed that Vietnamese students studying at Havana University are the seeds for the development of Vietnam, for the friendship between the two countries, asking them make efforts to study to achieve good results and hope that the school will continue to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese students.

The meeting was attended by Víctor Gaute, ICAP vice president. As hosts, members of the Board of Directors of the University led by its rector, Dr. Miriam Nicado García. There was also representatives of Vietnamese students studying here.

The UH, the most ancient and famous university of Cuba and a leading one in Latin America, has experienced the 290 years of development. It is not only connected with Cuban history and outstanding names of the Cuban revolution, especially leader Fidel Castro. It has contributed to the undergraduate and graduate professional training of Vietnamese, from 1969 to the present, with a total of 860 graduates in areas of knowledge such as biochemistry, pharmacy, chemistry, journalism, psychology, law, Hispanic philology, art history, economy, tourism and social communication.
