Thai Consul-General Apirat Sugondhabhirom Honoured with Medal of Friendship

A ceremony was held on Sep. 15 to award the Medal for Peace and Friendship among Nations to the Consulate General of Thailand in Ho Chi Minh City and present scholarships to Vietnamese students.

In the morning of Sep. 15, the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations (HUFO) and the city's Vietnam - Thailand Friendship Association held a virtual ceremony to award the Medal for Peace and Friendship among Nations to Apirat Sugondhadbirom, the Royal Thai Consul-General in Ho Chi Minh City.

Attending the event were Nguyen Thi Hong Diem, HUFO vice president; Nguyen Thi Hong Xuan, president of the city's Vietnam - Southeast Asia Friendship Association; Dinh Khac Duy, chairman of the city's Vietnam - Thailand Friendship Association.

In his remarks, Dinh Khac Duy, chairman of the Vietnam - Thailand Friendship Association in HCM City acknowledged the valuable, active and effective contribution of Consul General Apirat Sugondhabhirom in diplomatic activities to preserve, consolidate and further promote the friendship and cooperation relationship between the peoples of Thailand and Vietnam.

Every year, the Thai Consulate General sponsors the HCM City Sponsors' Assciation for Poor Patients to organize heart surgery programs for children, eye surgeries for poor patients in HCM City and Tay Ninh province; awards scholarships to orphans, students with difficult circumstances; organized for Thai students to participate in summer volunteer activities in the city.

Apirat Sugondhadbirom, in his role as Consul General of Thailand in HCM City since 2019, has participated in the organization of building, expanding and strengthening solidarity, friendship and cooperation relations.

Specifically, he joined the HUFO in peace, solidarity, friendship and development cooperation activities; established and developed friendly and cooperative relationships with Thai organizations and individuals who wish to develop relations with Vietnam through cultural exchange activities, economic cooperation, science and technology study, education.

The diplomat also joined the city's friendship union in formulating guidelines, policies, and legal documents related to people-to-people diplomacy.

Speaking after receiving the medal, Consul General Apirat Sugondhadbirom expressed his honor and gratitude to the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations and HUFO; and hoped for the friendship between Vietnam and Vietnam - Thailand will continue to develop sustainably in the coming time.

In the past time, the effective coordination between the Consulate General of Thailand with VUFO and HUFO has brought about positive results in people-to-people diplomacy, contributing to fostering the cooperative relationship between Thailand and Vietnam. In the context of the complicated development of the Covid-19 in the region and the world, Thailand is committed to always supporting and standing side by side with Vietnam in the fight to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Consulate General of Thailand also took the occassion to award 30 scholarships (each worth VND 1 million) to students with good academic achievements in the city, with the hope that these students will be an important resource to contribute part of fostering the good friendship between Thailand and Vietnam.

After the Covid-19 situation in the city is stabilized, the city's Vietnam - Thailand Friendship Association and the Thai Consulate General will organize the awarding ceremony of total 45 scholarships, including 30 scholarships received today and 15 previously received ones for students in District 6 and Nha Be district.

The representative of the Consulate General of Thailand in HCM City highlighted the importance of the young generation in promoting the development of the country. Therefore, they should have the opportunity to receive appropriate training and education to become an important quality resource for the country in the future, especially in terms of promoting relations with other countries, including Thailand.

The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) is an organization mandated by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam with the mission of developing people-to-people diplomacy and promoting peace, solidarity, friendship and cooperation between nations. The Medal for Peace and Friendship among Nations is the highest award given by VUFO to those who actively contribute to strengthening bilateral cooperation and good relations with Vietnam.
