Water-puppetry artist Phan Thanh Liem will bring a performance of miniature water puppets to the programme "Vietnam Day in Brazil" in Rio de Janeiro, from November 15 to 17, NDO reported.
"Vietnam Day in Brazil" is an event under the “Vietnam Days Abroad 2024” programme with the theme “Confluence of the quintessence of a thousand years - Rising in the new era” chaired and organized by the Department of Cultural Diplomacy and UNESCO, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The programme aims to promote Vietnam's image, people and culture to international friends, contributing to deepening and sustaining the relationship and strengthening friendship, understanding and mutual trust between the people of other countries and Vietnam.
Accordingly, “Vietnam Day in Brazil” will take place in Rio de Janeiro from November 15 to 17, with many performances introducing the unique cultural quintessence of Vietnam, such as water puppetry, lion and dragon dances and drums.

According to Artist Phan Thanh Liem, he will put on a show of selected traditional water puppet performances.
Artist Phan Thanh Liem was born and raised in a family with a seven-generation history of traditional water puppetry in Rach Village, Nam Chan Commune, Nam Truc District, Nam Dinh.
He is a successful design artist of water puppetry stages, as well as a screenwriter and contributor to the research and creation of water puppetry. Phan Thanh Liem has received many invitations to bring his miniature water puppet stage to the US, the UK, Canada, the Republic of Korea (RoK) and China.
The “Vietnam Days Abroad 2024” programme will take place in Brazil and Saudi Arabia in November and December, continuing to strengthen the presence on the world map of the series of national promotional activities.
The programme chooses the theme “Confluence of the quintessence of a thousand years - Rising in the new era” to honor and affirm the cultural and historical values of the Vietnamese people throughout the thousand years. This theme not only highlights the achievements of culture, art, and precious traditions, but also expresses the aspiration for development and integration in the context of modern globalization.
Through this theme, the organizing committee hopes that, from recalling the rich cultural heritage, from language, customs to traditional arts, it will be possible to encourage overseas Vietnamese to preserve and promote national identity, while contributing to the development of the country in the era of technology and globalization.
“Vietnam Day Abroad 2024” will take place in Rio de Janeiro right before the Summit of the Group of 20 leading developed and emerging economies (G20). This is the time when the 20 largest economies of the planet and many member countries gather together, providing an opportunity for the programme to reach the large number of high-level delegates attending the conference, thereby contributing to spreading the content and activities to the Brazilian people and many international friends.
Next, the program will be brought to the capital Riyadh of Saudi Arabia from December 13 to 15. The programme will continue to introduce the Vietnamese Cultural Space with its rich identity to the local public.
At the press conference, the Vietnamese Ambassadors to Brazil and Saudi Arabia welcomed the event “Vietnam Day Abroad 2024”, a meaningful activity on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Vietnam - Brazil diplomatic relations and the 25th anniversary of Vietnam - Saudi Arabia diplomatic relations.
The diplomat stated that Brazil and Saudi Arabia are both countries with great potential for developing cultural cooperation, and organizing national promotion programs in these two locations is extremely necessary, contributing to strengthening the friendly and cooperative relationship with Vietnam; at the same time, enhancing the image and presence of Vietnam on the world map.
