Digital Evidence in Trafficking in Person Cases - Vietnam and International Experience Sharing workshop took place in Hanoi

The Digital Evidence in Trafficking in Person Cases - Vietnam and International Experience Sharing workshop was organized by the ASEAN-Australia Counter Trafficking (ASEAN-ACT) in both face-to-face and online form.

Attending were 40 delegates from criminal justice agencies in the fight against human trafficking crimes from the Ministry of Public Security, the Supreme People's Procuracy, the Quang Ninh Procuracy, the Supreme People's Court, High People's Court in Hanoi.

At the opening ceremony, Nguyen Minh Hieu, vice director of the Ministry of Public Security’s Department of Foreign Relations, head of the ASEAN-ACT Steering Committee in Vietnam, and Lucia Pietropaoli, team leader of ASEAN-Australia Counter Trafficking Program outlined the importance of the collection, use and preservation of evidence that is digital data in the investigation of transnational crimes and human trafficking cases.

This is important in the context of the 4.0 revolution, the development of the digital age and the Covid-19 pandemic.

The organization of the workshop on Digital Evidence in Trafficking in Person Cases - Vietnam and International Experience Sharing is of great significance.

The workshop helps to provide knowledge for officials in the field of criminal justice to apply to solve difficulties in collecting and using digital evidence to prove the crime of human trafficking, contributing to the fight and prevention of crime.

Delegates from criminal justice agencies in the fight against human trafficking crimes

The workshop was organized into four sessions.

The first topic was general knowledge about human trafficking and digital evidence in human trafficking cases.

The second was about detection, collection and preservation of digital evidence in human trafficking cases.

The third topic was on ensuring the properties of digital evidence in these cases.

The fourth topic was the evaluation and use of digital evidence in the trial of human trafficking cases.

Fourteen Vietnamese and international speakers presented topics on the link between human trafficking, technology and digital data, as well as dark web sites and notes for law enforcement officers in detecting, seizing, preserving, analyzing and evaluating evidence to prove criminal acts.

They also mentioned the difficulties and obstacles in detecting, collecting and preserving digital evidence in human trafficking cases; legal evidence collection techniques and evidence specialization; and ensuring the integrity, objectivity and valuable evidence in proving crimes.

In addition to the presentations, the delegates also participated in discussion sessions, solved cases and asked more than 50 questions with the speakers to clarify issues related to the practice of handling digital evidence in human trafficking cases.

The workshop was organized face-to-face and online.

In addition to general knowledge, speakers from Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, UK, Australia and the International Criminal Police Organization shared practical experiences in detecting, tracking and collecting, preserving and processing digital evidence in the investigation, prosecution and trial of human trafficking cases.

These experiences help solve the case, and at the same time ensure the safety of the victim, especially protecting the confidentiality of personal information, and avoiding hurting them.

The documents in the workshop will also serve as a reference source in the work of criminal justice officials in Vietnam.

Recommendations at the workshop can also be used to send to Vietnamese authorities to improve the legal framework, especially the amendment of the Law on Prevention and Control of Human Trafficking. This is to prevent and effectively handle human trafficking crimes, and at the same time ensure the human rights of trafficked victims.
