The information is included in the circular of the Ministry of Information and Communications which is about to come into effect starting July 1, VNExpress reported.
Accordingly, all mobile phones manufactured in or imported into Vietnam starting July 1 must be integrated with E-UTRA technology (4G technology). 2G, 3G phones manufactured in or imported into Vietnam before July 1 are still allowed to circulate.
This Circular applies to domestic and foreign organizations and individuals engaging in the production and trading of equipment within the scope of regulation of the standards in Vietnamese territory.
This move aims at promoting the use of 4G / 5G smart terminals, towards the goal of popularizing smartphones by 2025. This is also the foundation for telecom carriers to consider stopping old-generation mobile technology, contributing to implementing the dual goals set out in the "National digital transformation program to 2025, with a vision to 2030".
At the same time, the Ministry of Information and Communications has stimulated the use of low-cost made-in-Vietnam smartphones. The ministry has also urged telecom carriers to coordinate with domestic phone manufacturers to test conversion assistance programs for subscribers using 2G phones to 4G smartphones.
Vietnam has currently more than 10 million subscribers using 2G equipment. 88 million subscribers use smartphones, 83 million of which use 4G devices.
