Vun Liem is a Cambodian international student in Chemical Engineering class CH1-09 of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, who has just won a consolation prize in the Vietnamese Speech Contest for foreign students studying in Vietnam in 2023.

He is one of 34 international students accepted by Hanoi University of Science and Technology in the 2023-2024 school year. The University has become a place where dreams come true for international students from many countries.

After the contest, Vuu Liem participated in the meeting for international students of the 68th class of the 2023-2024 school year organized by Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Friends are close like family

At the meeting, Vun Liem was honored to be one of 6 outstanding international students to receive a certificate of merit from the Board of Directors of Hanoi University of Science and Technology. "I have been a part of the University all these years and now I am very proud to continue to become a graduate student at this 67-year-old academy", said Vun Liem.

Talking about the Vietnamese Speech Contest, Vun Liem shared that Hanoi University of Science and Technology sent 3 students. Joining him was Oraiden Manuel Sabonete from Mozambique and Soumek Xaynguyen from Laos. Although team members are different in nationalities, they always support and help each other, showing solidarity between countries and a common love for Vietnam.

In the contest, each team presents their topic on stage for a maximum of 7 minutes. Presentations are scored directly by the Board of Examiners and announced at the end of the exam along with the award ceremony.

Vuu Liem and his team chose to deliver the speech about Vietnam with the theme "The great victories and epochal significance of the Vietnamese Revolution from 1930 to present".

Liem was excited and ready to prepare as soon as he received notice of participating in the contest. Striving to win the contest, he and his team members practice every day to get the best results.

Accompanying Vun Liem and his friends is Dr. Luong Thi Phuong Thao, former Head of the Department of Party History. She worked enthusiastically with the team for more than 2 weeks, practicing almost every evening on knowledge related to the topic the team had registered for. There are days when they stay up until 2-3 am to discuss and edit professional content.

Thao also took care of the health of all team members. "She reminded us to take care of our health and not drink ice water before the contest", said Vun Liem.

Thao gave Vietnamese names to the three students participating in the contest: Vun Liem is Liem, Oraiden Manuel Sabonete is Duc and Soumek Xaynguyen is Quang. "Every time we practice together, Vietnamese names sound strangely familiar. The distance between countries no longer exists, Vietnam is home, teachers and students at Hanoi University of Science and Technology are our relatives," said Vun Liem.

After days of hard work and practice, the team won a consolation prize. What makes Vun Liem proud is that in just a short period, they have overcome many strong opponents and brought home the award. He considers this a good stepping stone for himself and his fellow international students to strive to study and practice more in the future.

University offers warmth and affection

Together with Vun Liem, there are also international students from many different countries studying at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. In the 2023-2024 school year, the University accepted 34 international students from Laos, Cambodia, and Ukraine. The meeting and orientation session for international students of the 68th class for the 2023-2024 school year organized by the University helps them understand more and integrate into the learning and living environment here.

At the meeting, international students are informed of the regulations and instructions during their study. This partly helps them visualize and understand training regulations as well as ways to help them solve problems when they encounter difficulties in learning, psychology, and other activities.

Winhanage Mayomi Chandima Dulanji (Sri Lankan, student at the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering) will receive her degree at the end of the 2023 semester. Mayomi said that Hanoi University of Science and Technology helps her gain more specialized knowledge and valuable lessons. The University is a place that allows her to experience extracurricular activities and cultural exchanges for students, especially international students.

“I am lucky to be the only girl in the class to study in an environment full of very enthusiastic fellows. They do not hesitate to help and share with me many valuable things during the past 5 years of study,” said Mayomi.

Associate Professor Pham Thanh Huyen, Head of the Student Affairs Department of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, expressed her understanding with most international students when studying training programs taught in Vietnamese. She believed that, with passion and effort, international students will complete the curriculum content to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills and contribute to the development development of their home country.
