Associate Professor Duong Tuan Anh: Position of Vietnamese in The World Made Great Strides
Activities of a group of teachers teaching Vietnamese to Vietnamese people abroad under the guidance of Associate Professor, Dr. Trinh Thi Lan (Faculty of Literature, Hanoi University).

How do you evaluate the position of Vietnamese in the world today?

Currently, the Vietnamese community abroad is about 6 million people. Therefore, Vietnamese is developed along with the number of Vietnamese people around the world. Besides, Vietnam's increasing political and economic national status makes Vietnamese become an important language not only for overseas Vietnamese but also a matter of concern, attracting foreigners.

In Korea, Vietnamese is considered one of the main foreign languages that need to be learned. Workshops on Vietnamese are organized domestically and internationally such as in Taiwan and China.

I used to teach at Beijing Foreign Studies University, the students here learn Vietnamese. Every two years, they can participate in the national Vietnamese excellent student exam. China regularly organizes the above activities to help the Vietnamese language learning movement develop, especially in the southern provinces.

I once heard a Chinese person living in the Hekou border gate area (China) said, "If you want to have a better life, you have to learn Vietnamese." Obviously, for those who want to have economic opportunities with Vietnam, Vietnamese is a useful tool for their work."

The Australian and Russian communities also value Vietnamese. They established a Vietnamese language teaching and learning network.

Over the past 20 years, my observations show that the status of Vietnamese in the world made great strides.

As a companion to Vietnamese language training courses for overseas Vietnamese teachers in other countries, what are your comments on these courses?

I participated in four Vietnamese language training courses for expatriate teachers abroad. There are two online training courses due to the Covid-19 pandemic, each with about 200 people. In the past two training courses, I participated in teaching and interacting directly with overseas Vietnamese.

In each training course, teachers teaching Vietnamese to Vietnamese people abroad will be supported with professional knowledge on language teaching methods as well as additional Vietnamese language and culture foundations. Therefore, they can be more confident in teaching Vietnamese to overseas Vietnamese or foreigners.

I think that the need to learn Vietnamese, and better understand the cultural traditions of the nation is great. Being able to interact with overseas Vietnamese from many countries around the world, I am truly touched and appreciated. They are the ones who nurture the Vietnamese language around the world. Vietnamese is not only a language but also a culture, and a sense of national pride, Preserving Vietnamese is a way to express one's love for the Fatherland.

How do you evaluate the day to honor Vietnamese language in the overseas Vietnamese community (September 8)?

The day to honor Vietnamese is an important event, demonstrating the Party and State's concern for the Vietnamese language. It is also a day to remind Vietnamese people to love and appreciate the Vietnamese language and its values.

Activities to honor the Vietnamese language, including Vietnamese Language Honor Day, educate generations of Vietnamese people, especially overseas Vietnamese, about Vietnamese as a cultural value.

Activities honoring the Vietnamese language also create an environment for language exchange, creating learning motivation for Vietnamese learners. Activities honoring the Vietnamese language will attract many social sectors to participate directly or indirectly in Vietnamese language teaching and learning activities, contributing to a learning society.
