The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the local economy and society as a whole, effecting lives of millions of Vietnamese families and creating an unprecedented picture in the nation's history.

Despite these challenges, hope is being rekindle as the spirit of solidarity and mutual support comes to the forefront of the ongoing fight.

Great solidarity

Solidarity is viewed as an extremely valuable tradition and lesson taken onboard by the Vietnamese people, one that has been forged through thousands of years of history by building and defending the country.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Ngoc Anh from the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics views the 1945 August Revolution to be a great revival moment for a nation that worked together to allow common sense and basic human values to prevail.

That was the synergy of the entire nation, of all classes of Vietnamese people, showing the strength of international solidarity.

The August Revolution created an unprecedentedly powerful and widespread revolutionary climax which involved a large number of participating forces, regardless of ethnicity, religion, class, economic background, gender, and all members of the Vietnamese national family.

Over the past 76 years since independence, the solidarity of millions of Vietnamese people has led the country's through many invasions, won against several powerful enemies, and then made bold imprints for the cause of national construction and development. These acts show the great solidarity that exists to fight the enemy, cope with natural disasters, and push back the pandemic.

In his message, he acknowledged directions made by the Party and State in fighting the epidemic, ensuring people’s living standards and well-being are maintained, along with boosting socio-economic development. These prompt policies have been issued for the purpose of supporting people and businesses affected by COVID-19.

The Party chief noted that all agencies, sectors, localities, and people nationwide have proactively and drastically implemented a series of measures to combat the spread of the virus, including social distancing, vaccination, and the 5K message, with positive results being recorded.

On behalf of the Party and State, he commended the efforts made by Vietnamese citizens at home and abroad, thanked the international community for its assistance, and lauded the entire political system for its active engagement in curbing the epidemic and reinforcing socio-economic growth. The Party chief therefore called on the entire Party, military, and citizens globally to try harder and intensify their solidarity and determination to push back the pandemic.

He expressed his belief that such strong will and forceful actions, coupled with support from international friends, would result in a victory in the fight, contributing to common global efforts to achieve a world of safety, peace, friendship, co-operation, and prosperity.

In a letter addressed to frontline forces on August 2, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh wrote, “Through the past more than 500 days of fighting against a ‘hidden, transforming and invisible’ enemy, we have got a better understanding and been grateful to the sacrifice by all frontline forces, especially medical workers. Their devotion has made a nice picture with colours of humanitarian values, sacrifice, sharing and national solidarity.”

The PM used the letter to state that although COVID-19 has been developing complicatedly and unexpectedly, causing plenty of difficulties and hardships, it has failed to lessen the frontline forces' spirit to fight for the community.

“I can feel the spirit of ‘three readiness’, ‘three responsibilities’, and ‘five voluntariness’ of the glorious past days that are spreading in the frontline forces in the pandemic fight. You have been ready to go to anywhere, do anything for the people and the Fatherland,” PM Chinh stressed.

“With the persistence, endurance, high determination and more drastic actions as well as synchronous and comprehensive measures, along with the support of people and businesses in the COVID-19 combat, we will surely overcome the pandemic. We will win!” he emphasised.

Social distancing amid greater mutual support

The spirit of national solidarity and self-sacrifice for others is not only reflected in the actions of frontline forces, but can be seen everywhere, particularly through the actions of the people.

Despite enforcing social distancing measures, greater mutual support can clearly be seen demonstrated through many forms of charitable acts, such as setting up rice ATMs, mask ATMs, and oxygen ATMs to help people in difficulty. In addition, many free meals are being prepared to send to frontline forces to help them stand firm in the ongoing battle against COVID-19.

To Thi Bich Chau, chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Committee in Ho Chi Minh City, said that the strength of national unity will be decisive factor behind the sustainable victory of the Vietnamese Revolution and victory in the fight against the pandemic.

The results of the spirit of solidarity are also being vividly demonstrated through providing funding, purchasing vaccines, donating medical equipment, medical supplies, and food which can serve pandemic prevention and control efforts.

This contribution has come from numerous organisations, individuals, agencies, units, enterprises based at home and abroad, Party Committees, fronts, mass organisations, and Vietnamese people globally.

The source of the nation's strength remains in the spirit of solidarity. President Ho Chi Minh once said, "There is a close relationship between solidarity and victory, the scale of solidarity determines the scale and level of success. Only when the whole nation forms a unified, consensus-based bloc, will the country be strong enough to overcome all difficulties and challenges."
