The Angkor Photo Workshops, Southeast Asia’s longest-running international photography event, began in 2005 to provide affordable, high quality professional training to emerging photographic talents in the region. This year, it was held from 6-15 January in Siem Reap (Cambodia).

There are 4 participants from the Philippines, 3 from Vietnam, 2 from India and 2 from Cambodia.

Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar, Nepal had one participant each.

Angkor Hangover 2023, a screening of works made during the Angkor Photo Workshop 2023 and discussion with this year's participants, took place last Saturday in Hanoi (Photo: Nhung Nguyen).

According to the organizers, the annual tuition-free "Angkor Photo Festival & Workshop" returned with a redesigned format to strengthen and nurture each individual participant’s unique vision and autonomous approach to their practice.

For 7 continious days of the workshop, photographers were collectively led by three tutors (Veejay Villafranca, Katrin Koenning, Antoine D’Agata) and alumni facilitators (Sean Lee, Uma Bista, Mien-Thuy Tran).

Works from 15 emerging photographers from Asia who participated were shown in Matca Photography Space in Hanoi, titled "Angkor Hangover 2023".

The screening was followed by a sharing session with two Vietnamese participants, Nguyen Van Nhi and Duy Dao, and Jessica Lim, Director of Angkor Photo Festival and Workshops.

Sharing at the screening, Jessica said that Angkor Hangover is entirely organized by alumnis of the Angkor Photo Festival and Workshop, starting with Angkor Hangover 2012 in Manila (Philippines).

Jessica also emphasized the fruitful results of the workshops are enhanced thanks to local photography communities' impact within the country.

"It is important that the alumnis go back to the local community and share what they've done. Then, they inspire more people. [Angkor Photo Festival and Workshop] is a regional hub, so supporting local communities and local groups is essential," claimed the Director.

Vietnamese photographer Van-nhi Nguyen said that this year's festival is different because participants have to submit a project idea for the application, which was a challenge for young, inexperienced photographer. For her, the fast pace of the workshop is also a stressful process, unlike any project she had done.

Photographer Duy Dao recalled that the tutors, which are not only experts but also alumnis, left him a big impression. Also, he believed that he overcame the week-long challenge in the workshop thanks to being able to adapt, adjust and proactively create in difficult environments.
