Conference on Russia - Vietnam Cooperation Takes Place in Hanoi

Nearly 200 delegates, including foreign affairs officers of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations, scholars, and students of many universities and research institutes joined the conference on the current situation in the Russian Federation and cooperation between Vietnam and the Russian Federation on May 15 in Hanoi. The event was jointly organized by the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations and the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Vietnam.

In his remarks, President of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations Phan Anh Son highlighted the focus of the conference. The first focus is the current political, economic, cultural, and social situation of the Russian Federation. The second one is the cooperation between Vietnam and the Russian Federation. The last one is the future cooperation potentials of the two countries.

One of the most anticipated parts of the event is the speech by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Vietnam Gennady Stepanovich Bezdetko on "Russia's political and diplomatic trends in the current period."

According to the Russian Ambassador, despite the current complex context, the GDP of the country still increase by 3.6% by the end of 2023.

After the inauguration ceremony on May 7, 2024, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Russia's main development goals for the period up to 2030, with a vision to 2036, with the most important goals being ensuring birth rate, improving healthcare, enhancing welfare, and supporting families. Other important goals include promoting the potential of individuals, educating patriotic and socially responsible citizens; creating comfortable and safe living conditions, and improving the environmental situation.

The country also prioritizes many goals such as maintaining high macroeconomic indicators and economic development momentum; ensuring a leading position in technology; and implementing digital transformation in state and local urban management, economics, and social fields.

Regarding the foreign policy priorities of the Russian Federation, Ambassador Gennady Stepanovich Bezdetko said that, in 2023, the Russian President approved the new Russian Foreign Policy Doctrine. Accordingly, ASEAN countries hold an important position in the Asia-Pacific region.

"In reality, we emphasize the central role of the "G10" in the regional security structure, actively participating in the activities of forums under the leadership of this organization, including EAS, ARF, and ADMM+," stressed the Russian Ambassador.

He also affirmed that Vietnam is Russia's traditional partner, occupying an important position in Russia's foreign policy, with a comprehensive strategic partnership. In 2024, the two countries will celebrate the 74th founding anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 30th anniversary of signing the Treaty on Basic Principles of Friendly Relations between the Russian Federation and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

"Overall, we are satisfied with the development of political dialogue between the two countries. We are trying to promote economic - trade, scientific-technical, military, technical-military cooperation, and humanitarianism in new geopolitical conditions. We highlight the closeness of Moscow and Hanoi's approaches to many issues on the international agenda. We are coordinating our actions closely via our Ministry of Foreign Affairs," he added.

Russian Federal Trade Representative Vyacheslav Nikolaievich Khrinov presented "Russian Economy: Trade and Economic Cooperation between Russia and Vietnam" at the conference. The diplomat highlighted the areas where the two sides are cooperating and can expand in the future, namely the automobile industry, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, information technology...

On the other hand, the presentation on "Cooperation between Russia and Vietnam on education and culture in the humanities space of Vietnam" by Director of the Russian Center for Science and Culture Vladimir Vladimirovich Murashkin emphasized the roles of the Russian Center for Science and Culture in many fields such as politics - society, culture, language, and science - education. It has organized many exhibitions, film screenings, festivals, language learning courses, and clubs. Also, it supports information sharing and widely organizes Russia-related projects and programs that attract many Vietnamese people. In the 2023-2024 school year, the first-ever Russian Language Week was successfully organized, helping to bring Russian classes to many provinces and cities in Vietnam.

Projects like "Introduction Day for Russian Universities in Vietnam" and "Russian Universities" help Vietnamese young people grow their interest in Russia. The Russian Center for Science and Culture also organizes many activities with alumni and develops a partnership network between Russian and Vietnamese universities. According to the speaker, this is considered an important direction of cooperation to organize internships for Russian students in Vietnam.

Participants were provided with much useful information, gaining a richer view of modern Russia and Vietnam - Russia relations in the fields of politics and foreign affairs. communication, economics, culture, education... The bright spots in the two countries' relations over the past many years were also highlighted.

Many questions were raised for the speakers, focusing on the Russian economy amid the "storm" of sanctions and embargo, the renewed Vietnam-Russia scientific research cooperation agreements, the proposal to increase the number of scholarships for Vietnamese students, and Russia's support for Vietnam in implementing its "net zero" commitment by 2050. They were answered fully and frankly by Russian speakers.

At the conference, Ambassador Gennady Stepanovich Bezdetko said that according to the results of the phone talk in March 2023 between Russian President Vladimir Putin and General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, President Putin accepted the invitation to visit Vietnam and that he will visit Vietnam "in the near future".
