With over 30 participants divided into six teams, “Cultural Flowers” took place over four hours at the ModWest building on the Saint Lucia campus of the University of Queensland. To win, participants had to collect clues to correctly identify the craft village their team represented. Along the way, teams faced three challenge stages featuring puzzles and memory-based tasks designed by AVSQ.

The journey began with a game called “Memory Market”. In just 10 minutes, teams viewed an image showcasing activities from six traditional craft villages. Participants had to memorize as many details as possible to answer questions and gather clues about their team’s village identity.
The second stage, “The Four-Colored Maze”, offered a deeper exploration of the production processes for traditional materials. The gameplay, described by phrases like “Roll the Dice,” “Strategize,” “Explore,” and “Remember the Code,” challenged teams to collect three colors: red, orange, and blue - representing steps in crafting handmade products. Completing these tasks allowed teams to unlock a key and move closer to their village.
The final challenge, “Meaningful Treasure”, presented participants with a sea of seemingly random words. Teams had to find and assemble meaningful sentences to create a narrative reflecting the essence of their craft village. This stage also provided a final opportunity to uncover their village's identity.

Nguyen Quynh Anh, the project manager of “Cultural Flowers”, shared that the event was designed to connect students and the Vietnamese community living, studying, and working in Brisbane (Queensland). It also sought to raise awareness and appreciation for the intangible cultural heritage of Vietnam, the "land shaped like an S."
"Each stage was crafted to not only entertain but also to help participants gain a deeper understanding of the unique cultural values of craft villages like Dong Ho folk paintings, Gia Thanh conical hats, and Chuon Ngo mother-of-pearl inlays. The organizers hope the event inspires national pride and provides young people with meaningful and enriching experiences that foster connections," Quynh Anh said.
Established on June 18, 2021, with the support of the Vietnamese Embassy in Canberra and the Vietnamese Consulate General in Sydney, AVSQ is a non-profit organization focusing on skill development and career orientation programs for students in Queensland and across Australia. It also organizes recreational events to strengthen community ties. Moving forward, AVSQ plans to continue hosting events that develop skills and foster connections among Vietnamese international students. AVSQ aims to be a reliable support system for students on their journey of studying and finding jobs in Australia. |
