About 600 residents of the central province of Quang Tri benefited from a programme for rural water supply and sanitation.

In the framework of the project, one borehole at a depth of 38 m, a storage tank and two separate safe, clean water supply systems have been built. Particularly, the clean water supply system is equipped with a Water Cat 500 water filter with a capacity of 500 liters/hour supplied by the Czech company Hutira Vision.

The issue of environmental hygiene and clean water is more urgent than ever in the central region which was hard hit by recent storms and floods.

The project will address the damage caused by floods, lack of clean and safe water and hygiene for locals and children.

Although the last October-November storms and floods affected many localities, including Quy Ha village, the project has been completed as planned.

Poor hygiene and lack of clean water are among causes of malnutrition and diseases, especially in children. Under-five children in communities without hygienic toilets are 3.7cm shorter in average than their peers in communities with hygienic toilets. Pneumonia and diarrhea are the cause of nearly one third of deaths of under-five children in Vietnam.

Earlier, Minister of Economy, Science and Digitalisation of Germany’s Sachsen-Anhalt state, Armin Willingmann, through the World University Service (WUS), has presented 20 nano water purifiers to flood-hit areas of Binh Dinh and Quang Nam provinces.

Sachsen-Anhalt has to date presented 61 water purifiers to Vietnam, while the WUS has helped some 110,000 students, teachers, and residents in remote and mountainous areas access clean water by presenting a total of 210 purifiers./.
