First Vietnamese Photographer Joins 2022 World Press Photo Contest Jury

Photographer Pham Ha Duy Linh, a photojournalist based in Hanoi, will be the first Vietnamese ever to join the World Press Photo Contest jury.

According to vietnamplus, photographer Linh Pham will be the first Vietnamese ever to join the World Press Photo Contest jury. World Press Photo wrote on its website that "Linh’s personal work often returns to document the avant-garde aspects of the issues that has a link to the past in Vietnam where his roots are planted."

The Vietnamese photographer, whose full name is Pham Ha Duy Linh, will be responsible for the judging process of entries from Southeast Asia and Oceania along with four others from the UK, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines.

He is a frequent contributor to Getty Images, The New York Times, and National Geographic, amongst others, and his work has been published across platforms worldwide, according to the contest organisers.

Although doing actives at an international level, Linh's personal projects often focus on stories of the past and their influence on the contemporary Vietnamese scene.

From 2012, Linh has been working on photojournalism on many issues such as the extinction of giant catfish in the Mekong Basin, transcontinental human trafficking, burial rites or Bien Dong Sea disputes. Linh Pham is also known for her activities to promote the development of the photography community in Vietnam.

Since 2016, he co-founded Matca - an online magazine, publication and exhibition space with the goal of expanding discussions about contemporary photography. According to veteran photographer Hai Thanh, Linh Pham is "probably the first Vietnamese judge to receive this honor" in the contest's 67-year history of development.

First launched in 1955, the annual World Press Photo Contest recognises and celebrates the best photojournalism and documentary photography produced over the last year.

For six decades, as Worldpress Photo reported, the World Press Photo Foundation has been working from its home in Amsterdam as an independent, nonprofit organization. In that time, the world has changed continuously, and new developments in the media and technology have transformed journalism and storytelling. Its mission has expanded, and it draws on its experience to guide visual journalists, storytellers, and audiences around the world through this challenging and exciting landscape.

In the 2022 World Press Photo Contest, in each of the six regions of Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, South America, and Southeast Asia and Oceania, a selection of entries per category will first be made by a regional jury to send to a global jury.

The year 2022 is also the first time that the contest has changed its structure in the format and grading system. Instead of categorizing by subject (Reportage, Nature, Environment, Portrait...), the awards will now be divided into four formats (Single Photo, Photo Story, Long Term Project and Open Format). ).

Entries will compete in six regions: Africa, Europe, Asia, North and Central America, South America, Southeast Asia and Oceania. Each region has a panel of judges made up of five regional experts with expertise in the fields of photojournalism and documentary photography.
