At exactly 6 am, the flag was raised at half-mast at Ba Dinh Square (Hanoi) along with a black ribbon to the sound of the National Anthem. Flying the flag at half-mast is a ritual to show respect and deep remembrance for the deceased, especially at the State Funeral.

At the time of the ceremony, Hanoi was cloudy. Thousands of people in formal, dark clothes were present at Ba Dinh Square (Hanoi) early to attend the flag-raising ceremony for the State Funeral of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
Present at the ceremony, Nguyen Thi Tuong Hanh (50 years old, Hanoi) said: "It is really painful, I miss Uncle Trong so much. I still remember his words: We are descendants of Uncle Ho, our Party is the Communist Party of Vietnam, our nation is the Vietnamese nation. Our country will definitely move forward, it is not allowed to fall behind".

During the State Funeral, agencies and offices nationwide and Vietnamese representative agencies abroad fly flags at half-mast, with mourning bands (with a width of 1/10 the width of the flag, the length of the flag; hang the flag to 2/3 the height of the flagpole, black cloth to tie the flag to make sure it does not fly). Public entertainment activities are suspended.
