In 2017, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited China at the invitation of the General Secretary and Chinese President Xi Jinping. He was the first high-ranking foreign leader that China welcomed in 2017. Bui Van Kien, a Vietnamese citizen residing in Beijing, was honored to represent the Vietnamese community in welcoming the General Secretary and receiving his report on Vietnam’s economy, culture, diplomacy, and trade, with a particular focus on the achievements in promoting Vietnam-China relations.

At the meeting, the Party chief received the difficulties faced by the Vietnamese community in China and directed the Vietnamese Embassy to implement practical policies to help resolve these obstacles.

“He was a friendly, approachable, and open person. I always cherish those moments and the photo I was honored to take with him is a very precious memory,” shared Kien.

Since General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's visit to China, Kien has closely followed the development in Vietnam-China relations and Vietnam's standing in the international arena. He is delighted to see that under the leadership of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Vietnam has become a significant economy in the region, with its role and position increasingly elevated.

Upon hearing the news of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's passing, Kien and the Vietnamese community in China felt deep sadness.

“Seeing the recent photos, knowing he was elderly and seriously ill but still diligently working in the hospital's treatment room, I felt even more admiration and respect for him. He is a bright example of revolutionary ethics, dedicating his entire life to the development and elevation of Vietnam's position.

I believe that inheriting his thoughts and achievements, the Vietnamese people at home and abroad will become more united and confident in the Party’s leadership and policies, to which he devoted his entire heart,” said Kien.

Le Ngoc Quyen, head chef of the famous SuSu restaurant chain in Beijing and a member of the Executive Committee of the Provisional Vietnamese Business Association in China, who has lived in China for nearly 13 years, shared his surprise and sadness upon hearing the news of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's passing.

In his mind, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was a wise, dedicated, and hardworking leader for the country and the people. "I once had the opportunity to meet him. I will always remember his image of being very approachable and friendly, shaking hands and smiling with everyone he met," shared Quyen.

Quyen also noted that after the historic visit by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to China in late October and early November 2022, the relationship between Vietnam and China has become increasingly close. Many documents, agreements, and policies have been signed to facilitate trade and the exchange of agricultural, forestry, and seafood products between the two countries, making export-import activities and cargo transportation easier and more convenient.

The shock, disheartenment, and mourning were also shared by the overseas Vietnamese in Hong Kong and Macau, China, upon hearing the news of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's passing.

According to VNA correspondents in Hong Kong, Lawyer Doan Quynh Linh, President of the Vietnamese Association in Hong Kong shared her impressions of a leader who maintained a simple lifestyle, often using witty literary phrases when interacting with people.
