It is reported by VNExpress that a 44-year-old woman and her 15-year-old daughter were asleep in their house in Hoang Su Phi District, Ha Giang Province when rocks collapsed onto the house at around 5 a.m (July 21). The authorities tried to rescue the two but failed.

Another woman and her 13-year-old daughter were buried as landslides hit their house in Ha Giang Town, the capital of the province. Authorities found them after several hours and rushed them to hospital, but only the 48-year-old mother survived.

Also on Tuesday morning, a truck passing a spillway in Bac Me District slid into a nearby stream with the driver still stuck inside. Authorities had deployed bulldozers to recover the vehicle, only to find the driver dead, according to Cung Thi May, the Chairman of Bac Me District. The truck was transporting minerals at the time of the incident.

Floodwater also has damaged 57 houses and submerged more than 500 houses in Ha Giang City, and districts of Vi Xuyen and Hoang Su Phi. "The city has never been as severely flooded as now”, said Nguyen Manh Thang, chief of Ha Giang Town People's Committee.
Ha Giang Provincial National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and the National Committee for Disaster Response, Search and Rescue reported that the rainwater level measured at 7 am on July 21 in Ha Giang City was 220mm, and in Vị Xuyen District it was 286mm. Some areas in Hà Giang City were 1.2 meters underwater.

The Prime Minister asked Ha Giang to help flood victims, cure the injured people, and mobilize local forces to assist people in overcoming the consequences of floods. The dispatch urged local authorities to arrange temporary accommodation for households who have lost their houses, relocate residents out of dangerous areas, and provide food to prevent people from starving. The province needs to ensure traffic safety in areas affected by landslides and floods and repair damaged infrastructure.
Several northern Vietnamese regions have witnessed heavy rains since Friday last week, including Ha Giang and Bac Giang Provinces. More heavy rains are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday in Lai Chau, Lao Cai and Ha Giang provinces, according to the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control. Floods and landslides may also occur in these regions, the committee added.
