French Ambassador Nicolas Warnery presented a translation of the French Civil Code to the representative of the Vietnamese Ministry of Justice.

A ceremony was held to present the Vietnamese translation of the French Civil Code to the Ministry of Justice of Vietnam in Hanoi on June 24. The event was held by the French Embassy in Vietnam in collaboration with relevant agencies.

According to Nguyen Chi Lan, Deputy Director of the Department of Civil and Economic Law (Ministry of Justice), the 1804 French Civil Code laid the foundation for developing the civil legal system in France and many other countries.

“In Vietnam, the French Civil Code has become a valuable reference source for law enforcement and construction agencies, training and research institutions,” Lan said.

"In the process of building Vietnam's Civil Code, law-making agencies carefully study and selectively absorb the provisions of the French Civil Code that are suitable for Vietnam's socio-economic conditions. The development and publication of an updated translation of the French Civil Code are therefore very important," said Nguyen Chi Lan.

French Ambassador to Vietnam said, the civil code held an important position in the legal system of countries, as its provisions directly related to the lawful rights and interests of individuals and organizations when participating in civil relations.

To strengthen the exchange in civil law, which is of key importance in the cooperation between the two countries, the French Embassy has translated the French Civil Code into Vietnamese and handed over the print to the Vietnamese Ministry of Justice.

"France always hopes to have a strong and long-term cooperation with Vietnam in the field of law and justice," said Ambassador Nicolas Warnery.

Jean-François de Montgolfier, Director of the French Civil Affairs Department, Ministry of Justice said that France and Vietnam have the same legal culture, which is the civil law culture.

When studying the Vietnamese Civil Code, French jurists can find a lot of familiar terms. "There are many common points of reference but each country has its own traits. The similarities between Vietnamese and French civil codes enrich the bilateral cooperation," said Jean-François de Montgolfier.

The French Civil Code was born in 1804 and has been prepared and supplemented many times. Notably, individual and family law has been completely changed compared to that of the early 19th century. The Vietnamese translation has included major reform that was made in 2016 and has revised more than 300 articles of the French Civil Code related to contract law, general obligation regimes, and proof of obligation.

Jean-François de Montgolfier said that French jurists can refer to the Vietnamese civil law when amending the French Civil Code. He hopes that future would be regularly updated in the translation, thus enriching the two countries' cooperative relations.

France and Vietnam have enjoyed nearly 30 years of cooperation in the field of law and justice, reflected in the signing of many agreements at the high levels of the two countries' judicial authorities and between professional associations.

France has offered more than 900 scholarships for excellent law students of Vietnam and implemented a legal training program in French for nearly 200 Vietnamese students.
