Fun Vietnamese Proficiency Contest for Students in Russia
On the occastion of the Liberation Day of the South (April 30), International Labor Day (May 1) Celebration, and the 133rd Birthday Anniversaty of Ho Chi Minh (May 19), the Vietnamese Youth Union in collaboration with the Overseas Vietnamese Students Association in Kazan held the contest to further strengthening the friendship between Vietnamese and international student communities through language learning.

According to the organizers, this is the 2nd time they hosted this contest, welcoming 24 contestants to join 4 game grounds to challenge their Vietnamese proficiency.

In Round 1 - "Warm-up", there were 30 questions on vocabulary and grammar such as spelling, filling in folk songs, proverbs, counting nouns, correct word combinations, fill in words. In Round 2 - "Speed up", each contestant who won in Round 1 was given 10 questions were they must finish the sentences, whether it is a proverb, idioms or common phrase. In Round 3 - "Breakthrough", the contestants in turn answer the open-ended questions with a horizontal word and an image angle corresponding to the obstacle until there were 2 people left In the final round - "Finish", the 2 best contestants compete for the champion award by earning the most points from answering questions. |

Learning Vietnamese through extracurricular activities

According to the particpants joined this contest, language learning through extracurricular activities is very exciting and effecetive. One of the second runner-up, Ho Khac Ngoc, thanked the Vietnamese Youth Union and the Overseas Vietnamese Students Association in Kazan for creating a very meaningful playground for students to practice language together and connect with each other, especially among the overseas student community in Kazan city.
Another contestant named Christina said that she is studying Vietnamese in Kazan Federal University. Since this Russian student is interested in Vietnamese culture, she realized joining the contest will be a good opportunity to not only practice but also to prepare to come study in Vietnam after graduating.
Also from Kazan Federal University, Vietnamese lecturer Ho Thi Thuy Hang claimed that Russian students were very excited to participate in the contest because they can improve their Vietnamese through extracurricular activities. Understanding that Vietnamese language and culture is still not wel-known in Russia, Hang hoped the program will expand in scale and attract more participants in the future.
