General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong - dedicated and respected teacher

I remember the first time I met General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong when I was the first Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States in 1997. During a conference, the General Secretary asked us about international integration and relations with other countries. I said that the issue of international integration is like a stream flowing into a river, and from the river into the great sea. Vietnam is in a similar situation. We are like a stream flowing into a river, and then the river flows into the great sea. We must go out to the great sea, otherwise we will not know what the great sea is like. That is the issue of international integration, the issue of globalization, which is beneficial for the nation.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong agreed with me, and supported the viewpoint on integration, that Vietnam must go out to the great sea. Currently, we can clearly see the results of that integration.

Later, at various diplomatic conferences, I had many opportunities to meet and listen to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. His speeches and writings, especially about the 'bamboo diplomacy,' have been a valuable guide for us diplomats to study and follow. These are the teachings that the General Secretary has drawn from the historical development of our nation's diplomacy. Bamboo is strong but also flexible, and it has contributed to elevating Vietnam to the international stage.

In 2015, when the General Secretary visited the United States, it was a historic trip in the bilateral relations between our two countries, and in the history of mankind, as a Communist Party General Secretary was invited to visit the United States. Afterward, the General Secretary continued to contribute greatly to the Vietnam-US relationship.

In 2023, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong welcomed the US President, and the relationship between the two countries has been elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership. This is beneficial for our people and our country. Although we do not come from the diplomatic sector, we always consider the General Secretary as a dedicated and respectable teacher.

I met with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong many times. In 2014, when I was the Vietnamese Ambassador to the Russian Federation, I welcomed General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to an official visit to the Russian Federation.

On the occasion of the delegation of our Party and State visiting the Russian Federation, President of the Russian Federation Putin appreciated the leadership role of the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

As a world power, the Russian Federation appreciated Vietnam's foreign policy. Russia also affirmed that Vietnam's success is due to the resolute and correct leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Vietnam has integrated into the world, including fostering solidarity with the people of the Russian Federation. This confirms that Vietnam's foreign policy has been correct from the past until now.

In 2023, during his attendance at the 32nd Diplomatic Conference, the General Secretary provided clear guidance that Vietnam's diplomacy must firmly uphold its course and skillfully implement the orientations of the 13th National Congress of the Communist Party. This means employing a flexible, adaptable approach rather than a rigid one. Depending on the situation and conditions, we need to skillfully apply these decisions to ensure they are suitable, safeguarding the nation's interests, the Party and State's policies.

We want to clearly demonstrate to our global friends that Vietnam is always eager to make friends with all nations. Vietnam cherishes peace, maintains peace, and aspires to bring peace to countries not only within our region but also around the world. Therefore, Vietnam's responsibility becomes particularly prominent in the post-13th National Party Congress period. This is especially evident when Vietnam participates in global peacekeeping forces.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong also wants Vietnam's foreign affairs to move towards formality and modernity, gradually modernizing and standardizing officials, making Vietnamese diplomats equal to those in the world.
