The Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organisations (HUFO) and the city's Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Association hosted a get-together on Jan. 6 to mark the 62nd anniversary of Cuba’s Liberation Day (Jan. 1).
Congratulating Cuba on Liberation Day, Truong Thi Hien, President of the Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Association of HCM City emphasized that the faithful relationship between Vietnam and Cuba founded by President Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam and President Fidel Castro of Cuba has stood the test of time and developed strongly despite many ups and downs during the past more than half a century.
The Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Association of HCM City will work closely with the Consulate General of Cuba in the city to well organize cultural and people-to-people exchanges in 2021, helping to further strengthen the special traditional friendship between the two countries’ people, said Hien.
Vietnam and Cuba established diplomatic ties on December 2, 1960. Cuba was the first nation to form a Committee for Solidarity with South Vietnam, the first country in Latin America to have established diplomatic ties with Vietnam, and also the first in the Western hemisphere to receive Vietnamese students.

For her part, Cuban Consul General Indira Lopez Arguelles highlighted the major achievements the Government and people of Cuba have made in the cause of national construction, development and defence, and affirmed in any circumstances Cuba will always stand side by side with Vietnam while making every effort to preserve and promote the solidarity and friendship between the two countries.
She assured that the Cuban Consulate General in HCM City will organize friendly exchange activities in 2021 to promote trade and investment cooperation, as well as people-to-people diplomacy between Cuba and Vietnam.
The Cuban Consulate General in HCM City will continue to do its best to become a friendship bridge between the two nations, said Indira Lopez Arguelles.
January 1 was observed as Liberation Day in Cuba after Fidel Castro led an overthrow of the military dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista and established the first communist state in the Western Hemisphere on January 1, 1959.

Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong sent his greetings to First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba Raul Castro Ruz and President of Cuba Miguel Diaz Canel on December 31, on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of National Day of Cuba (January 1).
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc also sent his greetings to his Cuban counterpart Manuel Marrero Cruz while National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan did the same to her counterpart Esteban Lazo Hernández.
The same day, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh also cabled a message of greetings to Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parilla./.
