According to Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation is over the southwestern parts of the Bay of Bengal and above the equator in the adjacent Indian Ocean. A trough is extending from this system up to North Coastal Tamil Nadu.

A western disturbance is coming towards North India. This system has reached northern Afghanistan and its adjoining parts.

During the next 24 hours, heavy to moderate rains are likely to continue between Sikkim and Assam and Arunachal Pradesh with light to moderate rains at many places. In Arunachal Pradesh, there may be light snowfall at high altitude places.

Light rain may occur at a few places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur and southern coastal Tamil Nadu.

Due to an increase in the speed of northwest winds in the Gangetic plains, the effect of fog will be reduced. People can also get relief from cold day conditions in Haryana and Rajasthan.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a fresh western disturbance—storms that originate near the Mediterranean Sea, travel eastwards, and bring precipitation over northern parts of India during the winter season—will affect the Western Himalayan Region from Friday, January 22.

Under its influence, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall/snowfall is expected over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh, whereas isolated rain/snow has been forecast over Uttarakhand from Friday to Sunday, January 22-24.

Furthermore, heavy rainfall/snowfall is particularly likely at isolated places across Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on Saturday. The Weather Channel’s met team has indicated that about 20 cm of snowfall will be common especially across Jammu & Kashmir, with some spots also receiving 80 cm.

Isolated thunderstorms and lightning will also lash Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on Friday, and Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Saturday.

As for the northwest, very light to light rains and thundershowers have been predicted at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on Saturday.

In view of these forecasts, the IMD has issued an orange alert over Jammu & Kashmir on Friday, and across Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Saturday. The advisory urges residents to ‘be prepared’ for rough weather.

Apart from the wet conditions, the western disturbance will also impact the weather across West-Central India. The TWC met team expects the system to bring down both maximum and minimum mercury levels in the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Meanwhile, foggy conditions over the northwest are likely to persist, with dense to very dense fog on the horizon across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi for the next 24 hours, and in isolated pockets of Bihar for the next 48.

5-Day Nationwide Weather Forecast

According to Weather.com, a fresh western disturbance is set to visit the Western Himalayan region starting Friday afternoon. The activity will begin with snowfall in Ladakh, and spread into Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh towards Saturday. Before abating on Sunday, northern Punjab and northern Haryana may also receive rain. About 20 cm of snowfall will be common across Jammu & Kashmir; with some spots also receiving 80 cm.

Rain/snow activity will be limited to the Western Himalayan region, but the induced cyclonic circulation is expected to include southern parts such as Rajasthan and Gujarat, effectively causing lower temperatures both in highs and lows over the region through the weekend and into next week.

A cyclonic circulation around Sri Lanka will bring rain mainly over waters, but the southern tip of India can receive isolated rain until Friday.

Another cyclonic circulation is located over Bangladesh, and will bring scattered snow/rain across Arunachal Pradesh and the adjoining areas. The activity will likely cease by Friday.
