According to Skymet Weather, a Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir has moved away eastward.

A trough is extending from Chhattisgarh to Marathwada across Vidarbha in lower levels. A cyclonic circulation is persisting over Assam and adjoining area.

During the next 24 hours, the density of fog is expected to decrease over North-West India. However, dense to very dense fog expected to continue over parts of east Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal.

Cold day to severe cold day conditions is expected to persist over North-West India and isolated pockets of Madhya Pradesh.

Cold day conditions may occur in the isolated pocket of Bihar. Severe cold wave conditions are likely to impact many parts of northwest India and over Saurashtra and Kutch for the next three days, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Ground frost is also likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi during the same period. Cold, dry northwesterly winds are blowing over plains of north India which is leading to.a significant fall in minimum temperatures over northwest India.

Delhi’s minimum temperature had dropped to 2.1 degrees Celsius (°C) on Tuesday, 7 degrees below normal. Delhi (Safdarjung & Palam) reported 1,000 meter visibility at 8.30 am today. Its minimum temperature was 5.4°C, 3°C below normal.

Dense to very dense fog in isolated/some pockets is likely to prevail over Punjab and Uttar Pradesh during the next two days.

Due to dense fog/low cloud conditions, severe cold day conditions are very likely in some pockets over Uttar Pradesh during the next two days. Dense fog is also likely over Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during the next 2-3 days.

“Extremely cold winds are blowing from the Western Himalayan region where there was widespread snowfall last week. Low cloud conditions are blocking sunshine in some areas which is leading to very low maximum temperatures in some places over NW India,” said Kuldeep Shrivastava, head, regional weather forecasting centre.

According to IMD, a cold day or severe cold day is classified as such on two parameters - a minimum temperature of under 10°C (and maximum temperature of 4.5°C or 6.4°C below normal).

A cold wave occurs in the plains when the minimum temperature is 10°C or below and/or is 4.5 notches less than the season’s normal for two consecutive days. A cold wave is also declared when the minimum temperature is less than 4°C in the plains.

5-Day Nationwide Weather Forecast

According to Weather.com, dense fog is expected over the plains of north India for the next three days. Very dense fog is expected to engulf Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday, while similar conditions are possible over Punjab and Sikkim on Wednesday. Moreover, dense fog is also expected over northeast India on Wednesday.

Low-temperature conditions are likely to persist over north India, central India, northwest India and northeast India in this period.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dry northwesterly winds are likely to prevail over the plains of north India and adjoining parts of central India during the next 3-4 days. Under its influence, the parts of northwest India are expected to reel under cold wave to severe cold wave conditions for the next few days. Cold day to severe cold day conditions are expected over some pockets of east Uttar Pradesh in this forecast period.

Ground frost conditions are also very likely at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and north Rajasthan during the next 2-3 days.

Maximum temperatures are 2 °C to 4 °C below average over north India, north-central India, northeast India and northwest India in this period.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperatures are lower than average over north India, central India, northwest India and northeast India in this period. Minimum temperatures are higher over southeast India in this period. It is noted to be slightly higher over south India, southwest India and northeast India in this period.

Dry weather is expected across India, but isolated to scattered rain is likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands in this forecast period. Moreover, light rain is possible over east India and the adjoining area on Thursday and Friday.

Regional Forecast

Scattered rain and thunderstorms are likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Isolated rain is possible over Jharkhand, east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Dense to very dense fog is expected over isolated pockets of east Uttar Pradesh.
