Scattered rain activities are expected over North West and Central India from March 17th.

Following a wet weekend that saw many areas across Northeast India receive heavy showers and thunderstorms, parts of this region are expected to continue witnessing wet conditions for the next 3-4 days.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), fairly widespread rainfall and/or snowfall activity is likely to drench the state of Arunachal Pradesh over the next two days, and decrease thereafter. Furthermore, isolated thundershowers are on the cards for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya from Tuesday to Friday, March 16-19.

These conditions will be created by a trough in the westerlies and a cyclonic circulation, which are expected to persist over the region over the course of this forecast period, as per The Weather Channel’s met team.

In view of these predictions, the IMD has issued a yellow watch (‘be aware’ of the local weather situation) over the three aforementioned states, along with the neighbouring states of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura on Tuesday, March 16. No alerts have been placed over the region for the subsequent two days, although there remains a possibility of the advisory level getting updated by late Tuesday.

Meanwhile, similar wet conditions were recorded over the Northeast during this recently-concluded weekend, when a passing western disturbance interacted with the easterly winds blowing in from the Bay of Bengal, and created confluence that caused instability over the region.

These meteorological conditions then led to widespread rains and thunderstorms over the northeastern states, particularly over Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam and Meghalaya.

5-Day Nationwide Forecast

According to Weather.com, a trough and cyclonic circulation are likely to persist over Northeastern India in this forecast period. The cyclonic circulation could bring isolated rain or snow with lightning over the region in this period. Scattered to fairly widespread snow or rain with lightning is likely over Arunachal Pradesh from Tuesday to Thursday.

A western disturbance (WD) is situated around North Pakistan and its adjoining area on Tuesday morning. The WD is likely to affect the Western Himalayan Region (WHR). It is expected to bring scattered to fairly widespread snow or rain with lightning over Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on Tuesday and Wednesday and isolated snow/rain over the WHR from Tuesday to Thursday. Moreover, a fresh WD is expected to affect the WHR from Friday.

In the southern peninsula, a trough is likely to persist and produce isolated rain with lightning over Kerala in this period.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that due to the influence of interaction between mid-level westerlies and lower-level easterlies, thunderstorm or hailstorm activity is likely over Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

As for mercury levels, maximum temperatures are expected to be 40°C or more over the isolated region of coastal Western India in this period. Maximum temperatures will also be slightly lower than average over Central, Eastern, and Southern India, while other areas are likely to witness near normal or slightly warmer mercury levels during this period.
