At the Ha Tien International Border Gate (Prek Chak-Kampot Border Gate), on behalf of the Kien Giang Provincial People’s Committee, Deputy Director of the Kien Giang Provincial Department of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Viet Thong recently handed over VND 100 million to the representative of Consulate General of Vietnam in Preah Sihanouk province.
Addressing the event, Thong said appreciated the efforts of the Consulate General of Vietnam in Preah Sihanouk province in encouraging and supporting the Vietnamese community in Cambodia under the responsibility of the Consulate, including Vietnamese in Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Kep, Koh Kong, Kampong Speu Takeo provinces, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He stressed that the Consulate General’s timely recommendation and effective humanitarian aid activities had helped the community stabilize their lives in Cambodia instead of returning home, the latter of which could burden frontline staff in both Cambodia and Vietnam in the current Covid outbreak.
Thong underlined that the donation symbolized the hope of the authorities and people of Kien Giang to support the Consulate in helping poor Vietnamese in areas managed by the Consulate who could not yet return to Vietnam.
According to Consul General Vu Ngoc Ly, the people of Cambodia are facing immense challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic. By Sept. 10, 2021, Cambodia had 98,184 cases and 2,019 deaths.
Although the Cambodian government has been applying stringent measures, the Covid situation in Cambodia continues to be concerning, especially with the appearance of the Delta variant and a wave of Cambodian laborers returning from Thailand.

By now, the Consulate has provided relief for over 8,000 Vietnamese households and laborers.
With the efforts of the Consulate and the care of the Cambodian government, authorities in the six provinces covered by the Consulate have provided free Covid vaccination for the Vietnamese community in Cambodia.
Most Vietnamese in the areas covered by the Consulate have completed two Covid shots, and some in Preah Sihanouk, Koh Kong and Kampot have gotten the third shot.
Via the Khmer – Vietnam Association, Vietnamese in Cambodia committed to not return to Vietnam during this complicated period.
Most of the Vietnamese community in the country believe that the homeland is supporting them in the hardest times.
Despite this, thousands of Vietnamese working in Cambodia have been struggling due to loss of jobs and lack of income. The Consulate General has been encouraging them to find temporary jobs to overcome current challenges, via social media.
The Consulate General of Vietnam in Preah Sihanouk province has directly provided aid to over 500 laborers from Vietnam. Among these, 62 people who are stranded in Cambodia, cannot return to Vietnam or have not found jobs and have received accommodation and food allowances at the Consulate’s headquarters.
According to Consul General Ly, the Consulate General will use financial support from Kien Giang province to purchase five tons of rice and necessities for humanitarian aid in the coming time.
