On June 15, the 9th session of the National Assembly continued to discuss on socio-economic and state budget issues. Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh said that Vietnam may emerge to be the world's leading rice exporter in 2020.

Minister Tran Tuan Anh said that the rice export situation was complicated because the countries in the world were in a stressful and difficult period to combat epidemic. Many countries are increasing their purchase and food storage. In Vietnam, the COVID-19 epidemic is complicated, besides there are drought, saltwater intrusion and food shortage mindset. Especially, the price of rice continued to increase rapidly when in the first two months of 2020, Vietnam's rice export increased by 31.7% over the same period.

According to Minister Tran Tuan Anh, under this situation, the Prime Minister decided to suspend rice export until the end of May to ensure the principles of rice export management as well as stabilize domestic rice prices and ensure food reserves.

Emphasizing the flexible management of the Prime Minister and the Government when directing strict rice export management and adopting a temporary rice export quota of 400,000 tons in April, Minister Tran Tuan Anh said: Assessing that it is favorable to develop rice exports, especially when world rice prices continue to be high, the Prime Minister agreed (in a meeting with 13 Mekong Delta provinces, ministries and branches) to resume the normal rice export in May.

In April, the Government applied rice export quota of 400,000 tons to make sure of food security amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to the quota removal in May, Vietnam's rice exports increased by 11.8%, or 3.06 million tons in the first five months this year. Total revenues rose by 25.44% to US$1.48 billion.

This year, Viet Nam planned to export 6-7 million tons of rice compared with roughly 6.1 million tons in 2019, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, VGP reported.

Minister Tran Tuan Anh said that Vietnam's rice production has met the requirements of consuming rice for farmers in the Mekong Delta as well as the whole country, while bringing efficiency in managing rice exports. The Prime Minister requested ministries and branches to study and draw experience to ensure effective management, and further improve the legal frameworks to regulate rice export as well as ensure food security, reported by People's Army Newspaper.

“Although it is said that the management is not really smooth, but in the first 5 months of 2020, Vietnam's rice exports have been basically good; Vietnam exported 3.06 million tons of rice, increased by 11.8% over the same period last year, with turnover reaching US$ 1.48 billion, up 25.44%. Vietnam has also assessed in 2020 to become the top rice exporter in the world", said Minister of Industry and Trade.
