OCOP Vietnamese Shrimp Paste Exported to Japan and Australia
On December 26, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Industry and Trade organized a seminar on enhancing OCOP product consumption channels. Speaking at the seminar, Nguyen Minh Tien, Director of the Center for Agricultural Trade Promotion (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that by mid-December 2023, the number of OCOP products updated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was 11,054 products (an increase of more than 1,100 products compared to the data 1 month ago), exceeding the target set by this Ministry for the entire period 2021-2025.

But the more impressive aspect is that the quality of OCOP products has been greatly enhanced and improved. Science and technology have been applied and formed many new products, not only purely based on local values but meeting the needs of modern consumers.
Along with that, the design and packaging have been significantly improved to be more modern and impressive. Stories of each product are also exhibited to customers.
According to Tien, all OCOP products recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development meet Vietnamese food safety, hygiene, and technical standards such as ISO, HACCP, and GAP. Some 5-star or potential 5-star OCOP products even meet global market standards.

In the early stages, OCOP products were mainly concentrated in the domestic market, even just within the locality. Many products have expanded to the national market and some products have been exported.
“Previously, we often only thought of products such as rice, nuts, etc. that were exported. But now, even specialty products such as shrimp paste can be exported," said Tien.
According to Tien, in 2023, Le Gia shrimp paste was exported to Japan and Australia, and dong vermicelli from a facility in Binh Lieu district (Quang Ninh province) will also be exported to Australia and European countries.

“These OCOP products are not only traditional Vietnamese dishes but are now also starting to be accepted by international friends and the global market thanks to the standards of OCOP products. Now, we see many restaurants selling bun dau mam tom (Vietnamese noodles served with tofu and shrimp paste) in New York, the US,” said Tien.
