Quang Binh: Over 300 People Join Yoga Performance

The Embassy of India in Vietnam joined hands with the central province of Quang Binh to celebrate the 9th International Day of Yoga in Quang Binh province.

The 9th International Day of Yoga (June 21) took place in the central province of Quang Binh for the first time on July 29, VNA reported.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Director of the provincial Department of Culture and Sports Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy said the province is now home to over 40 yoga clubs.

The event enabled local residents to understand more about yoga and the Indian culture, and to popularise Quang Binh’s fitness and sports movement, as well as its potential and strengths to India, thus contributing to fostering cultural exchange and friendship between the two countries.

International Day of Yoga celebrated at Bao Ninh beach square in Quang Binh province with over 300 yoga enthusiasts, including provincial officials.

Roshan Lepcha, Political and Information Counsellor at the Embassy of India, hailed Vietnam as a co-sponsor of the United Nations resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga, and an important partner of India in celebrating the International Day of Yoga over the past years.

Over the past two months, the embassy has held activities in response to the event in 35 Vietnamese cities and provinces, which attracted a large number of yoga lovers, he said.

At the event, a 40-minute mass performance of yoga attracted the participation of Counsellor Lepcha, yoga coaches and 300 yoga practitioners.

This year, the day is themed “One world, One health”.

Earlier, more than 1,000 people took part in a mass yoga performance in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue.

The event, the biggest of its kind in the province so far, was jointly held at Ngo Mon Square in the former imperial city of Hue by the Indian Embassy in Vietnam and Bao Viet Insurance Corporation.

The International Day of Yoga was first celebrated in 2015. This year, the day is themed “One world, One health”. Yoga emphasises the values of mindfulness, moderation, discipline and perseverance. Applied to communities and societies, Yoga offers a path for sustainable living.

Yoga is a 5,000-year-old tradition from ancient India that combines physical, mental and spiritual pursuits to a harmony between the body and the mind and with the nature.

In recognition of its health benefits for the world population, the United Nations General Assembly designated 21 June as the International Day of Yoga (IDY), following a call by Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi in September 2014.

Vietnam was a co-sponsor of the UN General Assembly resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga and has been an important partner of India in promote and celebrate the International Day of Yoga. The immense popularity of Yoga in Vietnam demonstrates a sound awareness about benefits of practicing yoga and its role for deep cultural and people-to-people connection between the two countries.
