San Francisco Celebrates First Ever Vietnam-US Friendship Heritage Day

During a working visit to the United States of a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs in late August 2024, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang, head of the Committee, received a declaration signed by the Mayor of San Francisco. The declaration officially recognizes September 2, 2024, as Vietnam-US Friendship Heritage Day in the city and county of San Francisco.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang expressed gratitude for the significant contributions of the San Francisco city government to advancing the bilateral relationship between Vietnam and the United States, particularly its determination to establish a sister city relationship with Ho Chi Minh City even before the two countries normalized diplomatic relations.

Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang received the declaration signed by the Mayor of San Francisco announcing September 2, 2024 as Vietnam-US Friendship Heritage Day.

Deputy Minister Hang expressed her emotion at witnessing the Vietnamese flag flying over San Francisco City Hall during the flag-raising ceremony to commemorate Vietnam's National Day on August 30.

The annual flag-raising ceremony to celebrate Vietnam's National Day is a political event jointly organized by the San Francisco city government, the Vietnamese Consulate General in San Francisco, and the representative of the Vietnamese government on the West Coast of the United States.

According to Deputy Minister Hang, this is one of the clearest demonstrations of the friendly and cooperative relations between Vietnam and the United States in general, and between Vietnam and the city of San Francisco in particular.

The delegation met with a group of young overseas Vietnamese experts.

As part of the delegation’s visit to Houston and San Francisco, meetings and visits were held with a number of overseas Vietnamese who have had long-standing ties and have made significant contributions to the development of Vietnam-US relations. Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang appreciated the development of the Vietnamese community in the US. She expressed delight at the community's integration, success, and outstanding contributions to the local society, and at the same time thanked the community for their affection and contributions to their homeland.

Le Thi Thu Hang expressed her belief that the community will continue to develop strongly, and with the joint efforts of US friends and the Vietnamese community in the US, Vietnam will reach new heights.

On this occasion, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang presented many books on Vietnamese culture and geography to overseas Vietnamese and American friends, along with Vietnamese storybooks for children. She stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is ready to support the community in building Vietnamese language libraries, with the hope of spreading the love of the Vietnamese language among the Vietnamese community overseas.

During the visit, the delegation met Vietnamese religious leaders in Texas and California. Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang appreciated their dedication to taking care of the religious life of the Vietnamese community in the US, contributing to preserving and promoting the beauty of Vietnamese culture to a large number of overseas Vietnamese, and local people.

Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang emphasized that religious institutions are not only places for cultural and religious activities but also where overseas Vietnamese can express their affection for their homeland, maintain long-standing customs and traditions, and connect the community. They also educate the younger generation of overseas Vietnamese about their roots and the beautiful cultural features of the nation. At the same time, she expressed the hope that religious institutions will pay more attention to maintaining the Vietnamese language and culture for the younger generation through activities on holidays and festivals, organizing Vietnamese language classes, and building Vietnamese language libraries for the community.
