Six Vietnamese Universities Enter THE World University Rankings 2024

A total of six Vietnamese universities have been named in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024 which was released on September 27.

They include Ho Chi Minh City-based Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University, Vietnam National University-Hanoi (VNU), Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), Vietnam National University–Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM), and Hue University in Thua Thien-Hue.

Duy Tan and Ton Duc Thang were placed between 601st and 800th, while VNU was ranked between 1,2011st and 1,500th, and the remaining three - in the 1501st group.

Most notably, this year has seen Ho Chi Minh City Open University listed for the first time with “reporter” status, meaning that it provided data but did not meet THE’s eligibility criteria to receive a ranking, and agreed to be displayed as a reporter in the final table.

This year, the Times Higher Education has ranked 1,904 universities from across 108 countries and regions on the list, the largest and most diverse of its kind to date.

The table is based on THE’s new WUR 3.0 methodology, which includes 18 carefully calibrated performance indicators measuring an institution’s performance across five areas - teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

Duy Tan University

For nearly 24 years, thanks to its great efforts, Duy Tan University has made steady progress in education and training. The University has enrolled 2,600 students in 5 Postgraduate and 16 Graduate courses, 70,000 in 23 Undergraduate and Associate Bachelor’s Degree programs, and 1,400 students in Vocational programs.

Duy Tan University offers a wide range of academic programs, including Information Technology, Business Management, Foreign Languages, Tourism, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Medicine, Pharmacology, Literature and Journalism, International Relations, Cultural Tourism and Economic Law.

Through its 16 graduate courses, Duy Tan University has fueled the local labor market with a total of 45,000 graduates and post-graduates so far. Over 89% of graduates find jobs within six months of graduation. This rate is even higher, at 100%, for Duy Tan University Software Technology graduates.

Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) is one of the young universities in Vietnam, with headquarters located in vibrant Ho Chi Minh City, where it focuses on developing the country's economic and educational resources.

TDTU has been focusing on holistic human development to become a research university for sustainable development in Vietnam in the twenty-first century. TDTU, which was established in 1997, has been gradually becoming one of the largest and fastest-growing universities in Vietnam.

The inauguration of TDTU's Tan Phong campus is an important milestone marking the development of the university, which provides learners with modern facilities and state-of-the-art equipment. Moreover, the TDTU has four other campuses, including one near Nha Trang Beach, one in Lam Dong Province, and one in Ca Mau Province.

Vietnam National University-Hanoi

As the first modern university established and one of the two national universities in Vietnam, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has undergone various stages of development: the University of Indochina was established on 16 May 1906; Vietnam National University (November 1945); the University of Hanoi (June 1956). In December 1993, VNU was reorganized based on amalgamating the University of Hanoi and some other leading universities in Hanoi.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology

Established in 1956, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) is Vietnam’s first multidisciplinary technical university. It is the industrial engineer training center of the country during building and development processes, and the cradle of high-quality human resources for the country’s modernization and industrialization.

In its early days, the whole University concentrated its efforts on settling facilities for classrooms and laboratories by renovating and buying new equipment; and at the same time, on the development of managerial and teaching staff to prepare basic conditions for the opening of the First Cohort.

During those challenging days, HUST received strong support from international friends, especially the Government, people, and universities of the former Soviet Union through staff development programs, lesson planning, and pedagogical orientation.

Vietnam National University–Ho Chi Minh City

Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) was founded on January 27, 1995, according to the Government’s Decree No. 16/CP based on the merger of nine universities into eight members. VNUHCM was officially launched on February 6th, 1996.

In 2001, VNUHCM was reorganized according to the Prime Minister’s Decree No. 15/2001/QĐ-TTg (February 12nd, 2001). VNUHCM has its own organizational and operational regulations. Accordingly, VNUHCM is a multidisciplinary, highly qualified, and advanced center for post-secondary education and science-technology research activities that plays a key role in the national higher education system and can satisfy development needs.

At present, VNUHCM consists of seven member units: University of Technology; University of Science; University of Social Sciences and Humanities; International University; University of Information Technology; University of Economics and Law; Institute for Environment and Resources.

Hue University

Hue Univerisity (HU), formerly known as The University of Hue, was initially established in March 1957. After the reunification of the country in 1975, independent universities were established in Hue based on the existing faculties of The University of Hue. According to the Government Decree No. 30/ND-CP dated 4 April 1994, HU has been re-established by reorganizing all Hue-based universities.

HU is responsible for training students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, conducting research, and applying science and technology in a multitude of disciplines to serve the construction and development of the country in general and Central Vietnam and Western Highlands in particular.
