The Government of Sri Lanka conveys its sincere gratitude and appreciation to all who have contributed to these donations and wishes them good health and success in all endeavors, wrote a post in the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Vietnam's Facebook page on July 27.

Accordingly, Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Vietnam - Sri Lanka Friendship Association of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Associations (VUFO), and Dai Viet Huong JSC donated VND 1 billion (over USD 43,000) for the supply of medicine and medical products to the Ministry of Health of Sri Lanka.

This donation was initially made in Hanoi to the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Vietnam at the Quan Su Pagoda, Hanoi. Subsequently, Ho Thi Thanh Truc, Ambassador of Vietnam to Sri Lanka symbolically handed over the medicines and other medical supplies to Keheliya Rambukwella, Minister of Health of Sri Lanka at the Ministry of Health on July 26.

In addition to the above donation, Vietnamese Buddhist monks and nuns who are pursuing their higher studies in Sri Lanka also donated a sum of USD 15,000 for the purchase of medicines for the needy.

The Government of Sri Lanka conveys its sincere gratitude and appreciation to all who have contributed to these donations and wishes them good health and success in all endeavors.

According to Vietnamese Ambassador Ho Thi Thanh Truc, the Vietnamese community in the island nation is relatively small, including about 80 Buddhist monks and nuns studying Buddhism, 150 workers and about 30 Vietnamese women who are married and living here. Many have now returned home following the fallout of the worst economic trouble the island state has seen since its independence.

Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis in seven decades, with a severe foreign exchange shortage hampering the importation of essentials including food, fuel, and medicines, reported Aljazeera.

The island nation needs about $5 billion in the next six months to cover basic necessities for its 22 million people, who have been struggling with long queues, worsening shortages, and power cuts.

In 2020, Sri Lanka people living in Vietnam donated VND 66.5 million (USD 2,860) to flood-hit people in the central region meanwhile Vietnamese Government supported the Government of Sri Lanka with medical supplies for preventing Covid-19 worth USD 30,000.

Mutual support between the two nations in difficult times was practical action on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Sri Lanka in 2020).

Vietnam and Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations on July 21, 1970, making Sri Lanka one of the first countries for Vietnam to set up a foreign representative agency.

This is also the country where President Ho Chi Minh briefly stopped on the journey to save our nation and also where he returned to pay an official visit as President afterward.

In recent years, the two countries have strengthened cooperation and connection in political relations, economic development, science and technology.
