The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has just issued a new decision to determine January 22 as the date of establishing Thu Duc City in Ho Chi Minh City, amended from the previous decision of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City in implementing Resolution 1111 of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the arrangement of administrative units at district and commune levels and the establishment of Thu Duc city under Ho Chi Minh City, SGGP reported.
According to Vnexpress, a meeting on Friday will elect personnel for Thu Duc City’s legislative arm, or People’s Council, and its executive unit, People’s Committee, according to Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Home Affairs.
In its initial phase, the administrative apparatus of Thu Duc would employ 657 staff and after 2025, 459.

Thu Duc city has an are of more than 211 square kilometres and more than a million people on the combined area of districts 2, 9, and Thu Duc. The city borders districts 1, 4, 7, 12, Binh Thanh, as well as Binh Duong province and Dong Nai province.
Once the new city starts running, HCMC would have a sub-city and 21 districts.
Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Chairman Nguyen Thanh Phong said last year that the establishment of Thu Duc city will help minimise local authorities and promote resources for the local socioeconomic development.
“Thu Duc city is not only a driving force for economic development but also a motivation to improve people's lives. It is expected to contribute 30 per cent of the GRDP of Ho Chi Minh City and 7 per cent of the national GDP,” Phong said.
